Russia has begun shutting off a pipeline that supplies gas to Ukraine, after last-ditch talks failed to settle a price dispute.
The row erupted after Ukraine rejected Russian plans for a 460% price rise.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin made a last-minute offer of a three-month price freeze as long as Kiev agreed to pay the higher price after that.
Kiev rejected the offer, and Russia's state-owned Gazprom began shutting the gas supplies on Sunday morning.
The crisis has sparked fears that Russian exports to Western Europe could be hit, as most of the gas is channelled through Ukrainian pipelines, but Moscow insists there will be no disruption.
EU governments are convening a meeting of their gas industry experts in Brussels on 4 January to discuss the crisis.

This reminds me of when the USA shut off oil going to Japan which eventually lead to Pearl Harbour and WW2

quadrupled also. The american gas industry was very shortsighted
in increasing the size of their infrastructure, new gas wells and
so forth, we have enough gas for hundreds of years but they
dropped the ball and didn't drill new wells. It may have been
deliberate now that I think of it, if they internally predicted a huge
increase in price, then not build up capacity until the price goes up
4 times or more. Then slowly build it up, they would have not much
incentive to do that when they get so much for the same production,
eh.

Questions and answers about the Ukraine-Russian gas row:

What's your opinion about this row ?
Should the Ukraine pay ?
Is Russia punishing the Ukraine for following a more European course away from Russia and electing a pro-Western President ?
A difficult concept for some to understand I suppose.

So is the USA; what's your point?
Most countries are okay to live in...as long as you are not poor.
Most countries, when you are poor, suck to live in.
Europe probably has the best safety net for the impoverished, but it's sure goin' downhill the last decade or so.
As for the Ukraine...
With the West so obviously pushing for change in that whole region, it's no small wonder Russia is hitting back like this.
Expect it all to get a lot more exciting the next couple of years!

"Europe probably has the best safety net for the impoverished, but it's sure goin' downhill the last decade or so."
Out of interest, what do you mean by "goin' downhill"?, that Europe's safty net for the impoverished is going down hill? In what ways? How?

You sound as if you still believe the hostilities of the cold war are still in place. I think Russia is merely using gass to bring money in so it can catch up on the west again. An earlier post said the Russians were electing or had elected a prime minister (or the Russian equivalent) friendly to the west. Is it likely that such a leader would risk upsetting the west and the fragile balance of peace over an arguement over gas?!
