Getting to live here in the first place requires negotiation of the somewhat labyrinthine Indonesian Immigration system...What's written up on the board at the 'Kantor Imigrasi' bears little resemblance to that which is actually paid, (over and under the table) It's not vast sums of money, but it definitely helps to have a 'friend' in the immigration office; and the whole requires a certain degree of determination and patience, although it's a lot easier now than it was twenty odd years ago when we decamped here.

And another question... How much would it take to live comfortably as a retiree?
By comfortable, I mean just having a small flat with all the modern conveniences (air conditioning, washing machine, etc.), reasonable safety, and reasonable proximity to a city or t ...[text shortened]... retch that into comfort in the event of a "Oh nooooo myyyy government peennsssionnnn...!" situation.
You'd be okay with English, which depending upon where you are is widely spoken, and within the parameters of the low cost of living, this will again depend to an extent upon which region you're in.
To summarize, I'd say that the rewards of living here far outweigh the difficulties in so doing; untold natural wonders, great people, they can't do enough for you, and we've never witnessed any racial or other tension. Religious tolerance is the order of the day, and the way things currently are in other parts of the world, we're glad to be observing the goings - on from a safe, equatorial distance!
Edit: The health - service here is outstanding, I'd far rather be sick or injured here than in the UK.
