Don't forget, most of the voices telling you that a smoking ban is flying in the face of freedom are being sponsored by millions upon millions of tobacco company cash. Banning smoking in public places is the only way of protecting bar workers from the dangers of passive smoke. Rather more importantly, it is the single most important thing we can do to break the cycle of addiction and loosen the hold of an industry that kills many millions of people worldwide per year, each of them under the misapprehension that they are excercising their free will.
Here's a wee read to start the discussion off:

I'm not sure what my opinion on the matter is at the moment. However, I'm very inclined to think that if my government banned drinking, I'd get drunk every night out of spite. That's probably just me though.
Rich.

Well in Ireland a smoking ban (in all workplaces) came in on New Years Day.
I have to say its a much more enjoyable experience to sit in the pub now, especially during the day. The streets are always alive every night now as well, cos there are always people outside smoking. You don't cough up as much crap in the morning after a session either, and your clothes don't stink of stale smoke, only stale beer.
There are a couple of down sides though. 1 is the smell of toilets/farts/BO, which is much more pronounced without the smoke. The other is the fact that if you are a non-smoker and u go out alone with a smoker, then you spend a lot of time on your own in the bar. Similarly if you go out with a gang of mostly smokers, then there is rarely a time during the night when everybody is together.
That's my experience anyway.

Do you mean entirely, or in public? I support a ban on smoking in public buildings of all types, but not a general one.
I could however imagine a total ban in the context of the Kyoto Treaty on environment protection.

I think that a better solution would be to enforce bars/restaurants to install extractor fans of a sufficient quality. If they do not, then ban smoking in these establishments.
My biggest concern is that if the fun nazis get their way banning smoking, they'll turn to us drinkers nextπ²π²π²π²π²

... yeah, let's ban drinking in bars ...... π
people shoud be free to do whatever they want as long as it does not harm others. So since smoking also affect other people who inhale the smoke. It shoud be banned when done with non smokers around. When a smokers is on his own or around fellow smokers who want to smoke themselves to dead he is free to smoke all he wants.
