So you are not opposed to the Nordic system of governance? After all, it is "capitalism."

Democratic socialism is a process, or goal, toward which democratic socialist parties in the Nordic countries strive toward. Of course the Nordic countries are essentially capitalist, but informally they may be labeled (and certainly have been) democratic socialist in order to contrast their approach to governance from the extremely different approach of, say, the US.

And guess what? The Soviet Union was never communist, and China today is nowhere near being communist. And yet the Soviet Union, in particular, is held up by right-wingers as being "proof" that "communism is a failure," even though it practiced state capitalism with a mere veneer of communist ideology.

The capitalism of the US is indeed unbridled, but ironically that means the corporations and billionaires have such limitless latitude to dictate the organization of society and the destiny of millions of lives—both by lobbying politicians to pass bespoke legislation and moving mountains of capital around—that the end result is an economy with markets far, far removed from being anything like "free." Monopolies and duopolies abound, elections are bought, "business-friendly" laws are passed, regulations to safeguard people and the environment are trashed, and so on. Truly pure capitalism quickly destroys itself with its own contradictions.

Western societies decided a long time ago that war crimes are not acceptable. Retaliation is not a justification for illegal acts.
