Mohammed Bouyeri, a baby-faced 27-year-old with dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, broke his vow not to co-operate with the Amsterdam court by admitting shooting and stabbing his victim, Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, last November.
"I take complete responsibility for my actions. I acted purely in the name of my religion," he told its three-strong panel of judges.
"I can assure you that one day, should I be set free, I would do the same, exactly the same." . . .
Bouyeri then turned to the victim's mother, Anneke, in the public gallery, and told her he felt nothing for her. Mrs van Gogh watched as he read out from what appeared to be a statement:
"I don't feel your pain. I have to admit that I don't have any sympathy for you. I can't feel for you because you're a non-believer."
How can anyone with a shred of rationality continue to argue that Islamic terrorism has anything to do Israeli "occupation" of "Palestinian lands," America's "unilateral invasion" of Iraq, "torture" of prisoners at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, the widening "income gap," or any of the other litany of complaints that the terror apologists trot out?
Islamist terrorism arises from religious fanaticism and hatred, plain and simple.

No it doesn't, gpb. Talk to no1. It arises from plutocratic neo-fascism and post-industrial pseudo-autocratic neo-imperialism.
In other words, it's all our fault. It's your fault. Del's too.

If you're saying that psychological and unconscious factors are just as important, I would agree with you, but that's a far cry from saying that the perception of occupation, imperialism and social injustice has nothing to do with terrorism.

Oh dear oh dear, it must be tough living out there in the mean streets of Nonsequitursville.
You quote an article in which one particular Islamist says he committed a crime because he is a Moslem. You go on to conclude that all Islamists commit crimes solely because they are Moslems, and assert that this can have nothing whatsoever to do with global injustice. Quite apart from the fact that this is the weakest inference anyone could draw from the passage you cite, it completely neglects the fact that nearly all the key Islamists, including Osama bin Laden himself - who cited the US presence in Saudi Arabia - have overtly raised them in their manifestos, websites, communiques. etc.. In any event, it is one thing to say someone is filled with hate, but all hate thrives on objects, and the issues you so glibly dismiss are simply so much fuel for the fire. Terrorism rarely arises from prosperity, and where it does - as in the case of the RAF - it arises because of slightly differing perceived injustices, in their case the belief that German society was in the process of renazification.

If you fail to comprehend how religious fanaticism embraces all of "Israeli 'occupation' of 'Palestinian lands,' America's 'unilateral invasion' of Iraq, 'torture' of prisoners at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, the widening 'income gap,' or any of the other litany of complaints," then, pray tell, what do you understand?
