I don't remember who said it, but I remember some talking head once said something like:

The left takes Trump literally, but does not take him seriously. Trump supporters take him seriously, but don't take him literally.

Perhaps that will help you understand why he still has so much support, despite the way he behaves. He moves rapidly toward goals his supporters want and confounds people they despise (many of them Republican RINO's) along the way. They accept that it is a performance, that he isn't always honest (few politicians are), and accept his hair raising eccentricities and braggadocios style because he keeps moving the ball forward.
