Supporters of President Donald Trump/MAGA are completely baffling.
They say they’re patriots. Patriots support our Constitution, which includes freedom of speech, assembly and the press. But Trump supporters backed the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrectionists trying to overturn a constitutionally required election.
Schools, colleges and libraries today don’t have freedom of speech. One example is Harvard University, founded in 1636. Its graduates include 162 Nobel Prize winners. Harvard researchers are studying cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes, organ transplants, pandemics and much more. Trump just slashed billions in funding from Harvard because it allowed free speech and assembly on campus. Trump University was convicted of fraud.
Where’s press freedom now for the Associated Press or others shut out of press briefings? Is this Tehran or North Korea? No. America.
The “law and order” party supports Trump. Twelve of his associates during his presidency are convicted criminals, including Peter Navarro, who is serving as a senior economic adviser.
Extradited Kilmar Abrego Garcia has no felony convictions. Mafia dons Al Capone and John Gotti had three and 13, respectively. Trump has 34, but his supporters elected him anyway.
Convicted sexual offender Trump is backed by the “family values” party, and the religious right. Christ taught us to feed the hungry, heal the sick, love our neighbors and welcome strangers. Trump slashed charities, food banks, Health and Human Services and Medicaid. He divides Americans against each other and really hates immigrants.
The definitions of “patriot,” “law and order,” and “Christian” don’t really fit Trump supporters.
