Syria held presidential elections. How do you know Assad was a dictator? Most dictatorships hold elections. The USA and UK are probably dictatorships pretending to be democracies. How would you know?

Salvador Allende was democratically elected and the US overthrew him and installed a brutal dictator in power. Since the US government has no respect for democracy why would you have blind faith that our elections are not rigged?

The USA was funding Al Qaeda in Syria for regime change. USAID funded them. Look it up. Only Ukraine got more funding from USAID than Syria. Since Assad was in power you know the funding did not go to him. The funding was for regime change.
