Yeah, right. Next you'll be telling me that Saddam Hussein didn't harbour members of al-Qaeda.

Apparently he hated their guts because him a despotic secularist wanted nothing to do with a bunch of religious zealots.

Well, I suspect SOME of them have been trying for years. Earlier this year I saw a documentary about the rise of Islamic terrorism that went right back to the early 1980s, where the official US line was that there was a worldwide network of terror supported by the Soviet Union.

The thing was, some people in the CIA knew this wasn't true because they'd actually made it up themselves as part of their cold war propaganda. But apparently the new head of the CIA refused to listen to them and took it to Reagan as if it was the gospel truth.

So, yeah, this kind of things has been going on for a while. The big problem is that the people on top are so involved in propaganda and spin, they become unable to remember where fantasy and political rhetoric end and reality begins. They eventually come to believe their own vote-winning positions. In this context, it doesn't really matter what's happened in regard to Iran's nuclear program - I fear that the American leadership will BELIEVE that Iran has advanced further, and they'll act on that basis.

If any of that was gibberish, it's 2am here...

Yep. I heard that about four years ago. Do you think I should run for President of America? I'm quicker on the uptake than the current holder of the position.

Most of them don't want the job. They prefer not to have 3000 people following them everywhere they go and acting like they're the centre of the universe. Me, I think I could learn to live with it.

EDIT: I'm particularly sarcastic this evening. Everybody please notice that.

From the BBC - US Iran report branded dishonest:
"It says a report by the committee on 23 August was wrong to say that Iran had enriched uranium to weapons-grade level when the IAEA had only found small quantities of enrichment at far lower levels."

I downloaded to actual report (pdf) and searched it for "weapons-grade level", and got no hits. So I searched "weapons-grade"...six hits, none of which make the claim "that Iran had enriched uranium to weapons-grade level".

Go to page 9 of the Committee report and read the caption under the photograph of the Iranian nuclear facility at Natanz.

Based on the assertions made by the US Government before Iraq and what they actually found (correction: should have said what they didn't find) after the invasion I'd say the UN's protest probably has merit.
