Transgeder girls compete with girls. Transgender guys compete with girls.
Seems to me that a better distinction would be genetics. You are either xx or xy, if some other combination, then let that combination can be identified.
For the liberal, why would you want to treat a guy who wants to be a girl as if he is not an actual girl? Why the non-girl description LGTBBQ?

It is a useful distinction, as useful as nationality, race, height, colour of hair etc. plus God made two sexes. We are not homogenous souls floating around the place.
Since there's nothing you can do if you can't tell someone's gender, there's no reason to add it.
