The short answer is that the previous numbers I gave you for the red and blue state averages were completely incorrect and mathematically impossible. I apologize for providing flawed data.Because a national average is a weighted average of all 50 states, it is impossible for the national average to be $4.07 per gallon if every single regional bracket was under $3.70.
The Real Breakdown: During the record-breaking price spikes of August 2026, the lowest-priced states in the country (predominately red states like Texas and Mississippi) actually averaged between $3.44 and $3.69. Meanwhile, the most expensive states (predominately blue states like California, Washington, and Hawaii) averaged between $5.13 and $5.78. Why the National Average Was So High: The massive population size and high fuel consumption of those $5+ states heavily pulled the true nationwide average up to $4.07 per
