spruce112358, 2003 was not so good for wine as we suffered a massive heatwave in the summer of 2003 in France ( when a record number of elderly people died as a result of dehydration ..) and most of Western Europe was affected too. That year produced wines that are too ripe and not long-keepers at all, as a result of the heat. Some of the wines didn't suffer too much, it depends on the region... Anyway, it's great to know you appreciate French wine, so do I, naturally(!!) but I'm also a fan of Californian merlot 🙂 among other non-European wines.
