I thoroughly recommend the lead essay "Philosophy: Who needs it" in a book of the same title by, (hold on to the top of your heads all you collectivists) Ayn Rand. Which ever side of the debate you're on this essay hammers home the importance of examining and applying oneself to ones philosophy.
Also (and again this applies to anyone - capitalist, social ...[text shortened]... ones philosophy of inconsistencies, because contradiction is only possible in a muddled mind.

The key word here seems to be "fair" .. and life ain't that, no way, no how.
This is the theme of a " environmentalist, atheist, and progressive liberal." ... fair.
Life should be fair .. but isn't and can't be, therefore it's a failed concept, a failed phillosphy.
"Fair" is an ideal and has nothing at all to do with reality.
It's the old story .. crap in one hand and hope in the other .. see which gets full first.
Its easy to be a critic. Be cynical and it makes you sound like you know something.
In a room full of sarcastic put downers like jammer and all the hope gets sucked out of the air.
Just because fair is an ideal, it doesn't make it unworthwhile.
A turning point of western philosophy was the theory of forms which was all about pursuing the perfect.
Fair is a very useful concept.
It is not just a athiest creed, unless you think that god tries to be unfair.

You say that you do not care if anayone else shares your beliefs yet you share your beliefs with us? Why?
Also, if there be a God, he has given us free will and also seems not to wish to impose himelf upon us. Either you agree with what he has to say or you disagree and simply say he does not exist. You see if he "proved" to you that he existed you would then feel compelled to serve him, no?

I was just wondering what peoples philosphies were, why they are what they are, what you believe.
I am an objectivist.
Why? Because of the fact that out of all the philosophies I've studied it is the only one that does not try to impose it's will on anyone. All other ones I have studied the writers have at some point a part of what to do with the ...[text shortened]... n individual.
Any how I'm interested to hear what anyone else's philosphy is and why.
if you preach laissez faire, then you preach apathy. Apathy towards a crime is almost as bad as making that crime.

Two questions.

his philosophy of not imposing his beliefs on anyone else is only useful if nazis or muslim terrorist would have it. that way we would have a hitler who will seriously think of killing jews, but not do anything about it. we would have terrorists who will not blow up things.
however if his views would apply to decent people, we would have anarchy. Law is among others a view which some people impose on all the members of a society for a better life.
and asides of contradicting hank, here is my personal philosophy:
think for yourself. that's it. there is not a single philosophy that had discovered the meaning of life, all the absolute values that a decent person should uphold. some things you take from someone, others you take from someone else and others you figure out for yourself.
