Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man. Anything that can be built by man can be destroyed by him.

    - General George A Patton

    The Berlin wall didn't work

The Great wall of China didn't work

    Hadrian's wall didn't work.

Trump's wall (that Mexico was supposed to pay for) won't work.

    --Mchill

Mchill apparently regards all fixed fortifications as worthless.
If so, then Mchill shows extreme ignorance of military history.

To take just one example, Wellington has been praised for building the Lines of Torres Vedras,
which were an important foundation for his eventual victory in the Peninsular War.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lines_of_Torres_Vedras

No one claims that fixed fortifications should be successful forever.
No human-made structure will last forever. Even Egypt's pyramids will crumble.
The question is 'Do fixed fortifications serve a useful purpose for the direction of the conflict'?

Why should Mchill regard the Berlin Wall as a failure?
Because it did not last forever? (It was toppled on account of political changes.)
Or because it did not quite stop everyone from leaving the DDR (East Germany)?

In fact, the Berlin Wall succeeded in stopping or deterring almost everyone in the DDR
from escaping across it. The Berlin Wall served the purpose for which it was built.

Duchess - This was a quote by General Patton, you wrote this as if it was my quote. I would invite you to stop lying, and tell the truth about what I wrote. In addition, I know you think you know more about the virtues of fixed fortification than an American general that fought in 2 world wars, but you're just plain wrong. Please stop lying about what I wrote, and consider the fact there is a big difference between sitting at your computer, and experience in the field.

Mchill ignores his own sloppiness and wrongly accuses me of lying.

"This was a quote by General Patton..."
    --Mchill

In fact, Mchill failed to enclose it (Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man.)
in quotation marks and also left a blank line between it and mentioning George Patton.
So Mchill writes in a sloppy or misleading way and then blames me for it.
    .
Did his English teacher not tell Mchill that he needs to use quotation marks to identify quotations?

So I reckon is shows just how dumb human beings are since all they seem to do is keep building walls for no apparent practical reason.

I assume you then live in a wall free house with a fenceless yard and are just as pleased as punch about it.

Incidentally, do roofs count? After all, they are kind of like a horizontal wall.

Actually the general consensus was that the great wall of China totally worked.

Moreover... How didn't the Berlin wall work?

It could only be thought of as being defeated by the massive Berlin airlift operation...

... And sure, I guess the Berlin wall didn't prop up east German communism, lol
