In Denmark they protect cartoonists -- in Holland, they arrest them:

Here’s the offending cartoonist's site; most of the text is in Dutch, but you can make out the cartoons and they're pretty amusing:

Ask some people from Oslo about their experiences regarding that.

Satire has some basis in truth, so I can't understand why the Obama's are mad about that one. Indeed, if they're worried they are going to be portrayed as flag-burning, fist-bumping terrorists in the Oval Office, then he should drop out of the race immediately.

The magazine has said that the satire is of the irrational prejudices of the public. Sorry about that.

How many times have we had this debate?

DSR: Islamic people are taking over the world!

Majority of the World: Um... don't be stupid!

DSR: [insert slightly insensitive joke]

Majority of the World: Not very funny...

1 or 2 people: DSR is a genius! The islamic people are taking over the world, just like the gypsies and the mexican and the jewish and the...

Majority of the World: Yes, every affluent nation has it's own group it likes to blame for 'taking jobs', 'destroying culture' and 'messing up values'. Then they forget about it when the group's absorbed into their society. Let's just skip the first step and be nice to everyone everywhere. Culture changes, deal with it.

DSR: Don't be a pansy. People are dying in Iraq. I'd beat you up if I was knew where you lived.

And on and on.

Ok, now this topic can just be ignored.

I don't get it. I was ready to defend tolerance towards cartoonists and you ask me to be intolerant towards immigrants.

OK. With 25% of Oslo'a population now immigrants from non-western (mainly Islamic) countries, how's that working out? Is Oslo better or worse off than before?

How long do they project before the population is more than 50% muslim? What's that going to be like? What's Europe going to be like if the trend isn't reversed?

It's always better to hate than to be nice. That way, you can blame someone for everything and make yourself feel better.

Well, apart from your statistic being a little wrong (as is so often the case with knee jerk reactions) I don´t think anybody has noticed any specific problems. I know I haven´t but then I guess I´m an immigrant too.

You say that most of the immigrants are "mainly Islamic". Well, you might be interested to know that taking this years statistics, the majority have been from Poland, next from Sweden, then from Germany and fourth largest group from Lithuania. Now forgive me if I´m wrong but I don´t think any of those countries are Islamic states (not that it would matter much if they were).

Total immigration for the first quarter of this year has been less than 20,000 people. This does´t include people who have left Norway in that same time.

Frankly, Oslo looks and feels like you would expect a Scandinavian city to be albeit not planned as well as Stockholm or Copenhagen.

Were you making a point at all?

EDIT: I see you added a paragraph asking how long it will be before Oslo is 50% Islamic. I have no idea but as the percentage of Muslims is being diluted by other Europeans it would seem it might take a while yet. I don´t think the indigenous population will be doing a mass convert to Islam any time soon either.

I think he was referring to intolerant immigrants and we all know who they are.

You're right...this article lists 14% of Oslo as being non-western immigrants. Still a hefty proportion. Guess who's commiting almost 70% of the rapes in Oslo?

All right -- just for you I will rephrase my debate question: Should Western democracies tolerate bureaucrats whose values are antithetical to the state's core values, history and culture?

The cartoonist was arrested and let free.
Seemingly the complaints didn't warrant an arrest and he was free to go.

However, the cartoonist is deeply racist. I don't think he should be arrested, but I'd have no problem kicking his teeth in for him.
