If Russia moved on Scandinavia, Romania or Scotland, who-you-gonna-call? Why didn't Zelensky call on Scandinavia or Finland to help them? I get the answer being something about NATO, but if you say that, you are avoiding facing the fact that you think the USA has too much military.
Yeah, right.
So, any takers here? Esp you who have said our country is overmilitarized?
Why would you mention Scotland specifically?
We are overmilitarized. Our military is impractical for modern warfare where tactical measures are taken to stop an enemy without harming civilians or committing war crimes.
Modern Warfare is not like a video game (see what I did there) where you just go in, blow stuff up and win. That's why America wasn't successful in Afghanistan; despite our overwhelming military size, America couldn't overcome militants; we can't just go in and carpet bomb everything.
In the event that the world turns on America and the world wants to utterly wipe us out, yes; then our military size is useful. But outside of something like an alien invasion like Independence Day, our military size (and budget) is ridiculous.
@vivify saidMay I rephrase…. Do you think, as most liberals on the forum have said in the past, that the United States should not build up its military or maintain its present military strength? That, such money should be, or should have been, spent on other things?

@vivify saidThe largest part of our military
Yes, our military budget should be slashed and spent on other things. We can easily reduce a large chunk of military spending and still have the largest military in the world.
budget is retired soldiers pensions.
The problem is the waste. We've all
heard the stories about The Pentagon
paying $4 for a screw you or I could purchase
at Ace Hardware for a nickle. Such a huge
bureaucracy and, it seems at times, no one is watching the store.
It doesn't help that multitudes of retired military officers
go to work for defense contractors with very few restrictions.

The United States military is by far the largest and most powerful on planet earth. Bigger than Russia, China, France and the UK combined. In addition, at the push of a few buttons, the USA can kill every man, woman and child on planet earth with its nuclear arsenal - - How much bigger does it need to get? 🙄

@jimm619 saidNow that you bring it up, here's something else we could be spending money on if we slashed the budget; the VA is in piss-poor condition, with veterans not getting anywhere near the treatment and resources they rightly deserve.
multitudes of retired military officers
We can make explosions hotter than the surface of the sun but can't give decent healthcare to people who risk their lives for this country.
@mchill saidTricky call. Much of our 20th century

military strategy was shaped by the events
on Pearl Harbor, 12/07/1941....We vowed, at that time,
to never again be caught with 'our pants down.'
Then came 'The Cold War,' where we measured our missile's kill
capabilities in terms of overkill....At one time, I believe,
we possessed 5 times(?) 'overkill.' That is to say , we had the capabilities to kill EVERY HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET FIVE TIMES.
Is that enough weapons or should we build more? 5X overkill? 8X overkill 10X?...................What is the final outcome?
No weapon has ever been invented that has not been used.
We are the only country to use Atomic weapons...........Needlessly.
That war was was long over, Japan was crippled, we could have been easily blockaded the island......Japan had no fighting force left....Even Harry S. Truman, in his later years, admitted that he shouldn't have dropped the 2nd bomb on Japan, and that it haunted him until the end of his days.
I digress, I believe that the large scale wars, as fought in The 20th Century, are a thing of the past. Powerful forces will no longer go toe, to toe, as in the past. Conflicts will be conducted via Air Strikes smaller units (Viet Cong), limited operations, (Bosnia), religious wars (Taliban), and smaller territorial conflicts...Probably, indeed, proxy wars between our guys and theirs.
@vivify saidwe are literally witnessing one country slaughter the people of another country and you think we spend too much on our military…you trying to be the stupidest person ever?
Yes, our military budget should be slashed and spent on other things. We can easily reduce a large chunk of military spending and still have the largest military in the world.
@vivify saidScotland is an example of a country in-need-of-help when pounced upon by a huge force. Who they gonna call, Vivify? Finland? That is a clear answer. You fellers do not like it when the power of the USA is manifested. Pacifists all.

As to wasting money, all agencies his waste money. How do you like giving $40M to the Kennedy center, and $35M +-, to Pakistan for border protection, and to study gender confusion in their grade schools. Should we rather use it to defend ourselves and medicate veterans who were fighting a war while you were playing pinball and basketball in your safe little neighborhoods? Yes, you are saying. I hope you are. are you trying to get me started!??!
@vivify saidGet $40M from the Kennedy center, and $5M on the study of bee procreation...that should do it. Geez. Libs, Green people. All with Biden as their puppet. Proud are you??

@mchill saidI figure in today's world, we need to use more wasted money to build up our military.....After all, we have to be prepared on all fronts, maybe Taiwan is next. And what if we are pretty much spread a bit thin, and Iran makes a move on the USA. Would we have enough armaments? Probably not.

@vivify saidBeing 'the largest military in the world' is not necessarily all we have to be. Prob need more at the look of things.
Yes, our military budget should be slashed and spent on other things. We can easily reduce a large chunk of military spending and still have the largest military in the world.
@Mott-The-Hoople
We would overpower China AND Russia if we had just HALF or military might right now.
Does the word overkill come to mind?
And that does not make me a tree hugger, just practical advice which will never be acted on.
That said, cutting the military by half would freak out the ultrarightwingnuts in congress so that would never happen.
But even a 10% cut would give tens of billions for anything else.
@averagejoe1 saidMy point is being made right before your very eyes, everyone. We need a large military, every country looks to us, we help people, and we need enough to help ourselves. Nothin y'all can dream up is a good argument for reducing military.

You might try to make an argument that an invaded country may call upon another country besides the USA? Who, pray tell?
