Most commonly that would be an animated GIF file.

You can use a multitude of programs to make them. Popluar would be Marcomedia Flash, but you can use the likes of Photoshop or even MS Paint to make the images.

Do a google search for "how to make an animated GIF"

first you make a regular 3d animation, then apply hammer until it's 2d.

You don't need Flash to make them, in fact that makes it far more complicated. Its much simpler to use programs like Fireworks or Photoshop ImageReady do the job.

Thats right. No need for Flash. Imageready is much easier.

I'm glad you elaborated there, leaving things at 'gimp' would have been fun tho.

Does ImageReady have a gif animator? I've always used the Microsoft one.

Yup, I've used it to make most of the animated .gif avatars I've used on this site.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out. I use Photoshop all the time, but I've never really checked out Imageready (I have it on my machine though).
