Suzi, you would be one of the few who know this fact. Good for you, I say in all sincerity.
So I do see your point. It's hard to get a more shocking loss of life than that.

Do someone even remember what happen in the center of Sarajevo (marketplace) 15 years ago ???
I do know that the siege of Sarajevo was a tragedy of epic proportions, and it took the leaders of several countries to step in and stop it.
I was a bit too preoccupied with tragedy in my own life at the time to remember any of it though.
But that's my point. The Sarayevans remember.

I disagree.
2,751 people* don't die in such a short span of time every day.
You may not like America or Americans, but please, STFU and give us our day of remembrance.
*This figure doesn't include those who died at the Pentagon, nor those who died on United Flight 93. It only includes those who died at the World Trade Center site.
but you still havent really taken in what i said....
put it another way, if 10,000 died in iraq due to two planes hitting large towers would it be as big???
Originally posted by eatmybishopIf it happened in Iraq, and it had the same level of media infrastructure as the US, then there certainly will be plenty of coverage about it every year.

In the US, you will obviously hear about it a lot. Also in the UK (and the majority of other European countries) because of diplomatic relations with the US.

Had 2750 people died in 1 hour and 45 minutes from terrorist activity anywhere in the world, yes it would be big news.
Had it occurred in Iraq to 10,000 people, you bet it would be big news.
Edit: One reason it is so big here in America is that I, along with millions of other Americans, saw it happen *live* on the Today show or CNN. Yes, I *watched* all those people die when the towers collapsed. You can't just shrug your shoulders and go back to your oatmeal after something like that.
Yes, all those people dying was horrible. Anytime people die, it is horrible.
9/11 was memorable for several reasons:
It was made memorable because of the circumstances surrounding it, the fact that these were terrorists. Human on human aggression is always memorable because it is so horrible to think about. Look at the crusades (no I am not comparing 9/11 to the crusades, just and example of human on human aggression).
It was made memorable because of the place the terrorists hit. The World Trade Center was more than a U.S. symbol, it was a symbol of the world economy. The Pentagon is a symbol of U.S. power and intelligence.
It was made memorable because of the huge U.S. media that covered every second as it unfolded, the drama, the people walking away with bloody faces, the people jumping from a 100 story building to their death. The second plane entering the South tower. The towers collapsing upon themselves.
How could this NOT be memorable?
No, this was not the only horrible thing to happen in the world, but it was very important to the U.S. and it was a turning point for most Americans.
