Originally posted by BLReidI used to play a lot more than I do now, but Planscape Torment (1998 - already mentioned) has the best storyline you will find in an RPG.
Thanks to everyone for all of the input here. It's been very helpful.

Due to my limited time nowadays, I avoid the MMORPGs which not only have a subscription but usally require tons of time to get anywhere in the game, so I stick to single player games.
Never Winter Nights - Awesome game, tons of mods and community crafted campaigns (anything by Adam Miller = great). Based on D&D so it's familiar if you are up on the current versions of the rules. NWN2 is out and I don't but games until they are < $30 so I can't comment on it.
Final Fantasies - Fun, but very linear.
Diablo - Old but they were great in the day. D2 was addictive and drew tons of people into online gaming and into the item/exp farming mindset.
I don't remember anything else you asked about, but I do enjoy the Elder Scroll series (no oblivion yet, Arena hooked my on cRPGs).
Anyway, I am about 2 years behind the times when it comes to games so I will say if you have a Camecube pick up Skies of Arcadia. I'm done rambling now.
Originally posted by blakbuzzrdI hope you played Final Fantsy VIII. It's the best of the lot.
I picked up my first videogame RPG with the release of Final Fantasy VII. I still have a soft spot for that one.
Do you have a Playstation? If so, there are hordes and hordes of amazing single-player RPGs. I can recommend a whole laundry list of 'em.
Originally posted by AThousandYoungAgreed. I detested FF VIII. Uninspired characters, beyond-absurd weapons (Gunblade, anyone?), and that stupid card game made me nearly swear off the whole genre.
The graphics and the story are incredible. The gameplay licks lice infested donkey sack. That game was soooo boring....except when there were cut scenes.
FF Tactics was awesome, though.
Well I started Morrowind. Went into the so-called beginners dungeon in that first little town. I have no idea how to fight, so naturally I got wiped out. I'd feel much better if I could find something that at least gave the basics of combat in this game. Anyone feeling kindhearted enough to forward some basic tips. Not asking for game spoilers here, just some Morrowind 101.
Thanks,

Ultima 7 is to RPG games what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. Nothing ever came close. Planescape Torment stands as an excellent number 2.
I played III, IV and V before I stopped with that series. Later on I bought a CD with all of the Ultimas, but it didn't work very well on my modern computer. Those Ultimas were the RPGs I grew up on.
Originally posted by AThousandYoungMe too. I played them from IV to VIII.

VII was an opus. A fabulous ending that could never be bested under the same model. They didn't even try to do better as they changed the format completely to Ultima VIII, resembling more a Diablo than an Ultima.
Ultima VII is probably my favourite game of all-time...
Edit: I started with C64's Bard's Tales and the D&D's Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds. 🙂
Edit 2: Ultima VIII is a bit of a stain in the series.
Originally posted by PalynkaPool of Radiance was FANTASTIC. I loved that game. The follow ups (Curse and Silver Blades) were very good too.
Me too. I played them from IV to VIII.

Bard's Tale was also a pretty good game.
