A Question for the Brist

The word 'compost' is pronounced in the UK with short 'o' sounds, as in 'lost', not with a long 'o' sound, as in 'host', 'most' or, 'post'. Why the hell is that?

Do you go to the post office or the post office?

Someone please, in the NAME OF GOD, tell me why you pronounce it 'compost'. I'm sure there's a good reason, I just haven't heard it yet.

We pronounce it in the way we invented it to be pronounced - it's you lot who do it wrong, as per usual. 🙄😕🙁

I'm not saying it's wrong, I just want to know why it is. Jesus, you guys are edgy.

BdN says it's because of the stress on the first syllable. What are other examples of that rule?
