My answer to this question is: yes !

Especially the animals in the bio-industry should be treated better.

What are your thoughts on this matter ?

charlie,

i have contacted lisa franzetta who is the campaign coordinator via email. she says that peta hasn't even started distributing the leaflet and won't do so till monday. they haven't even given it out to other AR groups yet so there is no distribution that has taken place.

the radio reports you heard are false and this would seem to coordinate with the fact that i found nothing on the internet about any distributions at all. the things just aren't out yet. i do not believe peta would publically lie about this since it is pretty easy to prove.

what has happened, i think, is that certain segments of the media are jumping to conclusions (ie peta will be giving this out to little kids) or are engaged in pure fabrication (possibly from people like
Star Jones on "The View" who is a fur advocate). some groups just jump at the opportunity to bash peta (and other activist organizations) through smear campaigns (see http://www.consumerfreedom.com).

lisa also added:

"We do plan to start distributing these on Monday, but again, only to
adults and children over 13 if appropriate. There is also a disclaimer
letter that we send to any activists ordering this leaflet noting that
it is not intended for and should not be given to small kids."

the fact that the distribution is starting monday is also confirmed by friend and former student of mine who recently started working at peta, so i have no doubts about it anymore.

i do appreciate the fact that you brought this matter into the open, because i was just as concerned about it as you. i am glad though that i dug into the details from various sources and found out what really was happening.

the media will have something non-fictitious to munch on, after monday.

prad

Anybody handing my daughter something like that better be either very brave or very stupid 😠 Because i know i would end up in jail over it, and they would be in ITU

Prad,

Good to know that it wasn't done, you'll pardon me for being a bit leary though? And again in my simple life it's (PETA and the fur industry and animal rights) much ado about something (to paraphrase without minimizing). People in this area just laugh and shake their heads! There are far greater concerns out there.

not at all, charlie! it's good to be leary about this sort of thing because it can and does happen - and frequently from commercialized industries that try to brainwash our youth. for instance, cigarette companies go after the younger population and have been sued for this (successfully too, from what i recall)

activist groups in any domain always meet 'resistance' - as you can see right here from some of the more 'flamboyant' postings πŸ˜€

i am appreciative of the communications we have exchanged on this matter and hope we continue to do so in this and other threads.

Hi Prad,

In that vein(cigarettes and youth) I am a firm believer that the food industry should not be allowed to advertise on Saturday morning TV. Most of the products they advertise are slow poison.

πŸ™„BTW, did I mention I've worked in the food industry all my lifeπŸ™„

Charlie

full agreement from me on that! i also think that there should be some control as to whether advertising is misleading or not. but it won't happen until people fight for it!

having been in the industry, you obviously have an excellent insight. interestingly enough, many activists in many fields become that way because they have worked in the very area they choose to oppose and know what is really happening. i became an activist for the rights of kids with handicapps to be not institutionalized (back in the 80s), because i was a teacher dealing specifically in that area. my wife advocates on behalf of caregivers because her background is in dealing with elderly people.

the odds are often huge, but victory is also often achieved. i found it rather amusing that phillip morris is being forced to put out ads telling kids not to smoke on tv πŸ˜€

Hi Prad,

I find we have more in common...our 32 year old son is autistic with cerebral palsy. He lives here on the "farm" with me and my wife of 36 years. Just one more of those "concerns" that I feel are more important.
I admire you and your wife's advocacy. Much, much more needs to be done.

Peace,
Charlie

PS.More on the food industry later

thank you, charlie. it would seem we do.
there certainly isn't any shortage of causes is there πŸ™‚

look forward to hearing from you about the food industry later.

also, if you get a chance, take a look at my wife's organization's website:

www.familycaregiverssupport.org

the ideas are pretty innovative in the elder care system, but she has quite a few government people interested. many of these ideas were developed from the work we did with the integration action groups that advocated for kids labelled handicapped back in the 80s.

I myself used to be a vegetarian for years. Because of medical reasons (yes!) I was advised to start eating meat again. I still support the necessity of protecting animals from exploitation and giving them a life that is in accordance with their natural needs.

You don't necessarily need to be a vegetarian to support the need of change in factory farming in order to give animals a better life.

In my view also Christians should be in favour of this. The Bible says that we should take care of the creation. The Bible also says that animals are our brothers. In factory farming we are certainly not taking care of business as God intended ....... far from ...
