I heard his show the other day, he is a DJ now! He does theme shows, the one I heard was Christmas music. He comes across (to me anyway) as pretty erudite in his knowlege of music, not just folk but Jazz and Swing, giving details about the musicians on the track played and such. He was waxing philosophic at times also, for instance, he said about people down and out, 'You don't need Dr Phil, you don't need Dr Ruth, and you PARTICULARLY don't need me, if you want to feel better, help someone less fortunate than you, help out at a soup kitchen, spend some time at an old folks home, etc." He came across to me like a 21st century Salvadore Dali, same kind of iconoclastic personality producing prodigous works in his genre and later becoming a kind of spokesman. I was suprised at his sincerity on the air.
Anyone else hear him?

I listen to AOL radio on Saturday mornings and Ben Sidran does a show that is pretty good as well.

BTW, my wife has sirius and she likes it because it has NPR. I found out XM has a public channel as well but not the full NPR thing. Channel 15 is a full fledged folk music channel on XM. It has real folk musicians as MC's, like Mary Sue Tueey (sp?), a DC based folk singer who does MC duties at the Smithsonian Folk Festival among others, I like her a lot when I started hearing her. Just as an aside, she looks startlingly like a girl in my own band back in LA, Southwind, she looks so much like Sylvia Herold it is freaky. Sylvia has a great voice and is/was into other music besides folk, she went on to be fairly famous in the San Fransisco circuit with a band called KatsnJammers and others. Great singer. Anyway Mary Sue does the show like I would, comparing a cut from a singer and then going to another version from another country or some such, following the changes in a folk song. Very interesting, to me anyway. I have this ongoing gig in Toledo where it's a 500 mile trip one way and before XM, I used to just listen to the CB, chan 19, the truckers channel for road info but now I pretty much only listen to channel 15 on the road.

Sirius has one called the coffee shop or house which is mostly folk music. I think Oprah is only on for an hour a week.
She hated whites then and worked out her anger at demonstrations like being at the "I have a dream speech" and the like. She has mellowed a lot and is still a dynamite personality and incredible singer. You won't find shows like that on Sirius.
