Obviously it's quite a shocking judgement.
But.. the offenders were under age at the time of the offense as well (I don't know how much under age, I haven't read that anywhere).

It's headline news here. The prosecutor for the Queensland Department of Public Prosecutions (sort of like an AG in the States, I guess) who recommended the sentence to the judge has been stood aside while an investigation is undertaken, and senior judges are looking into the decision of the judge (a separation of powers thing). It's definitely shocking, and is causing some big waves here already. The Queensland premier (state governor) and our new prime minister have expressed strong disapproval of the sentences.
Let the aboriginees sort it out for themselves, it's their screwed up "culture". As the article states, it's rampant in their society, or whatever you call it. Why should they muck up proper Australian courts with the way they live? Have a tribal court do what they want with them, which will probably be nothing.

I'm confused as to how a 10 year old could "probably consent" to being gang-raped. Even if she had "consented", are there not statutory rape laws or an age of consent in Australia?

That is my point. 11 year olds have sex with a 10 year old deserves a whole other punishment than me or a 16 year old having sex with a 10 year old.
Without knowing the ages at the time, it's impossible to judge the sentence.
