Several years ago, FIFA issued a guidance for referees regarding fouls. In that guidance, FIFA advised with the exception of handling, that referees must not allow the intent of the player to factor into the decision to award a free kick. So the Australian player didn't have to "mean to" do it. However, I think that your interpretation of the inciden ...[text shortened]... te the answer to that question.

In retrospect, I wouldn't have awarded the penalty.
bump... strange game strange reffing!

Mwuuuuaahahahaaaaaaaaa

Losers ,no one mentioned the fact that Australia played half game with one more player but wasn't able to break the italian stonewall.

When coming to defense, hands off, Italy is the best.

No, it wasn't a penalty but you had about 40 minutes with a one man advantage for it not to matter! If you can't beat ten men then you don't deserve to win. Besides which it was a very harsh sending off.

Ditto! But whatever, like I said yesterday about England, you can say we're rubbish, you can say we're lucky, but we don't care! Sometimes it just goes the way nobody expects!

England rubbish????? Who would say such foolishness? Italy got lucky as they would have lost in overtime. That was a bad call today and was not worth a call leading to a penalty. Refs basically handed them the game with that. I mean how often is a penalty shot actually stopped? I agree down a man, Itlay should have lost by like 2 goals but they certainly didnt deserve to win the way they did.

ok, conclusion, FIFA is a joke... it is about putting the "big" teams into the finals, for business purposes.

It is clear now.

I think FIFA needs a small panel of ex-officials and ex-players with the authority to yellow and red card the officials actually working the games.

Well, I've watched the disputed play about a hundred times now--the video is here: http://media.putfile.com/Italia_Australia.

Jose Luis Chilavert (the color commentator on the clip) thinks the Aussies got robbed, but I am not so sure.

It appears to me that Grosso didn't try to avoid the contact with Neill-- in fact you can see him start to lift his left foot and then lower it again, seemingly to make sure that it catches Neill. So, it was probably a voluntary dive.

On the other hand, Neill's tackle, (which looks like it was actually an attempt to block a shot that never came), had the effect of impeding Grosso's run to goal. Sure, Grosso might have been able to hurdle him, but the fact is that doing so would slow him down and make it that much easier for the supporting defender to clear the ball away. So if you call nothing there you basically reward Neill for getting beaten and making a bad tackle. Of course you don't want to reward play-acting and gamesmanship either, but calling nothing there might have been a bigger injustice.

The red on Materazzi was dubious also. There wasn't a violent contact, but watching the replay it looks lke the Australian player minimized the impact by dodging the tackle-- had he not done so it would have looked a lot worse. So it was borderline but not a terrible call.

With the exception of that tackle, and a couple goofy giveaways in the second half, I was really impressed by the intelligence and composure of the Italian defense. But their forwards are going to have to elevate their game if they want to have a shot at the final. They can't go all the way on set pieces and penalties.

During the game? Come on Del - you've gone daft!

FIFA sends an inspector, always a respected former international referee, to every international match. It's his job to assess the performance of the refereeing team. Each member of the crew is graded from 0 - 100. I've lost points on assessments because I didn't have a tan, because I ran too har ...[text shortened]... go right to the pocket - and you get what we had yesterday with Portugal - Holland.
Well, I was joking, SQ. But it does seem to me that the officials interrupt the flow of the games too often. Unless something is obviously bad just let the guys play the freakin' game.

I have been playing football (soccer) since I was very young and used to get teased because I played "wogball". So I grew up worshiping the Italian teams of old. Baggio, Schillaci, Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Don ...[text shortened]... will leave…… So in times like this there is only one thing to say…

GO THE SOCCEROOS!!!!!!
It wasnt supposed to end that way...

You think sending off an Italian was about putting the big teams in the finals?

I'm all for debate about the refereeing, but the conspiracy theories have to match ALL the facts.
