So I finally watched it.
The plot is at the level of a child's fantasy book by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. The world-building is hokey in an Anne McCaffrey sort of way. Very effective strategy. The winged beasts did make me relive some long forgotten fantasy reading moments.
The way the Americans were handled was interesting. Total caricature ...[text shortened]... al.
An Arthur C. Clarke or even Asimov type plot would be stunning with those effects.

Okay, so I went to see this in 3D the other day. I've never seen a film in 3D before and I have to say that it really does enhance the experience of the film. However, the film itself is utter balls.
Imagine Dances with Wolves, on an alien planet, with blue creatures and re-written by a 12yr old.
Need I say more?
Okay, I will: Cameron should be a ...[text shortened]... is devoid of any real point, depth or interest.
Visually astounding, cerebrally puerile.

Meh, it's not worth it. We're not going to agree on details.
I'll just that the whole of ID was just an excuse for that scene with the building being blown up. It's all anybody remembers from that film. There is no such scene in Avatar. The CGI was not meant to make you go "Wow!" during a few key scenes. It's ever-present and so serves the story.

I would like to see Gene Wolf's 'Long Sun' series on film, a generational star ship story, 500 years inside a 50 mile long space ship with all the political upheavals that would upset the original applecart.
Another one I'd love to see on the silver screen is "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russel about a trip to Alpha Centauri and the civilization they find there.
Originally posted by sonhouseWhat about another early Clark book titled 'The City and the Stars'. SF has so many awesome stories that would translate into films. Of course I can see budgets for these movies equalling Avatar, and unless you insert a predictable plot line and all the other crap that goes with big budget HW films like Titanic, Independence Day, ect.... they will most likely not get the $ backing.

Rendevous With Rama was going to be produced/co-produced by Morgan Freeman I believe? It would be great to see what they could possibly do with the shots inside Rama. Too bad Kubrick is not still around.
I'll check out the books you listed. Always up for a new read.
