For my money it doesn't get any better than when Michael Bolton sings "When A Man Loves a Woman".
Really? Bolton sounds like he's straining to have a bowel movement in that song...just my opinion...

In order of preference; Robert Plant; lead singer for "Cracker'; Jim Morrison; Chris Corneal of Audioslave;...too many others to name...

Where were the women in your examples of hard rock singers, are you sexist?
I would completely agree with you if the question was asked about best rock vocalist. Although she could easily hold her own against almost any other singer mentioned in this thread, I just don't think of her as a hard rock vocalist.

Slade was an excellent band. Saw them in concert in the early 70's. Did a great version of "Move Over".

Nobody mentioned that guy from Journey. Man, they totally rock.

Lying beside you here in the dark
Feeling your heart beat with mine
Softly you whisper
You're so sincere
How could our love be so blind

We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side
So now I come to you with open arms
Nothing to hide
Believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me
Open arms

Living without you
Living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you
Wanting you near
How much I wanted you home
But now that you've come back
Turned night into day
I need you to stay
So now I come to you with open arms
Nothing to hide
Believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me
Open arms
