since i probably can't support this claim to the general public with just one song...
i'll have to say sir Elton John...
elton john???? are you having a laugh??? we're talking the best pianists here, not some cheap, chord playing, part time piano player called elton john? could he play bach, beethoven, chopin...? could he do what a jazz pianist does and improvise for 20 minutes on a chord progression

In fact,in this context, I suppose there can be a diffrence. The best player is someone who can play (technically) in the best way. I hope you know that it is not the only thing that makes a musician.
yes, but a lot of the great classical players cant improvise... isnt that a necessity for the "complete musician"?

I wouldn't say that the technically best player is the best player.

Technically it may be, but practically it's far from a technicality. 😉

A lot of fine names have been mentioned in this thread. Next time I'm Chopin for records, I'll take this Liszt along.

You don't need a Liszt, you can always go Bach if you forget something.

If you forget something, you deserve a good Haydn.

The only way to get a Handel on this situation is to invent composers when Popinovtoschopps*.

*Sadly this is not an original pun, but it is probably an original spelling.
