Let's establish some ground rules, so we all understand each other...
Personally, I think chatting is unnecessary (even rude) while the clock is ticking. Yes, I know chat can be turned off, but does my opponent know I've got it turned off, or does he/she just think I'm a rude bastard? Maybe I don't feel like turning it off.
1. "Hi, good luck."--or some other generic greeting (before the clock starts) is ok but not mandatory , I think.
2. While the clock is ticking, no chat.
3. After the game ends, "Thanks for the game." is appropriate.
4. Discussion of the game (or anything else) is fine after the game, provided both parties are willing.
Agree? Disagree?
Let's hear it.

60/60 games: Maybe I just want to chat sh-one-t to a TFC buddy ovewr a long game?
I think ultimatley it's up to players to agree.
P.s. It was rude not to accept either my 1/0 or 60/60 game offer that was up whilst you were connected. I had to take a 5/5 that came up.

Originally posted by rhbRight, there are always exceptions if someone is a buddy or something. Also chat is more acceptable during longer games. I was playing 1 min games the other day and my opponents kept typing stuff at me (in a 1 min game!). It was frustrating.

P.S. I didn't see any games posted by you, otherwise I probably would have taken one. You must have me on your ignore list. 😉

Edit - actually someone accepted it whilst I was writing this post, and they left the board when I had 22 seconds left on the clock (I was black to move after 1 e4). If only they'd waited!

P-
I like to use the chat function to say things like "DOH!!" and "damnit..." or "nuts, looks like you've got it now." This does not require a response, shows that I'm semi-aware of the drubbing I am receiving, and makes my opponent feel better. Ask Bad Wolf - he's just one of the many who have been made happier by my obvious "three-stooges" blitz chess ethic. Next time, I'm typing "Why I oughtta..." and "Wub wub wub wub" a lot. 😀
