It's annoying when a club advertises as "open to beginners" but they have a participant who regularly insults, taunts and puts down the beginners and casual players.

The club president must know this, so he has put in a minimal talking, no talking rule. I have been called at home and told, "I talk too much." So I came last week with the intent of no talking, just chess -- which is a bit cold, but okay (it's not a tournament!) I am a female player, and I don't intend to be a "chatty Kathy".

But instead, I have these men that won't shut up, including two that are hovering over my game, saying stuff like, "Grandmaster A and Grandmaster B," and "bad chess player." These are adults, but it felt like Jr. High. (I teach kids -- I don't hang out with them).

I give up. I need a new club in the Inland Empire of California, or even Orange County or Los Angeles. The Yucaipa club isn't fun anymore.

Competitive chess players are generally socially inept men, though there are many exceptions. Get used to it.

You're missing the chance of a life time here.
You could watch their games and make idiotic comments. Put a thumb tack on their chair seat when they get up etc etc.
Christ on a crutch, haven't you ever been a pain in the ass? 😕

Univ Calif at Riverside used to have an active club you might check them out. I went to a few tournaments there when I lived in Victorville.

Among teen and college age players, there is a tendency towards good natured jibes, smarty-pants insults, and all around jerk behaviour. It is almost exclusively a male trait. We expect better out of more mature players, but a lot of us don't grow out of it.

What's hilarious is these are just typical pubb players. Nothing special. In the grand scheme of things would be CRUSHED in the real world.
