Another statistical game: what is the lay equivalent of a bishop and how do you compare the likelihood of their being of a certain tendency?

An example would be the school system in South Africa (to talk about something I know) -- teachers known to be child abusers have often been quietly asked to go elsewhere, to avoid scandal, and so have been able to find further victims. There I'd say you have an example where the incidence of abuse i ...[text shortened]... en though the likelihood of any given teacher being an abuser is the same for any citizen.
Well, CFT's link has the police claiming that the higher hierarchy of the Church of Ireland has been cooperating fully with the police. If there were any cover-ups they were done at a local level and is then not representative of the church as a whole. There may or may not have been cover-ups, there certainly are a lot of allegations but not a lot of concrete evidence.

Let's not forget here that this started because of accusations of this being widespread to the point where one should not be a Roman Catholic because of it.

Patsy McGarry wrote all too briefly about my call to include the Bethany Home in the Irish State’s redress scheme, but a lot about abuse being something peculiarly Irish and Catholic (Irish Times, June 20th). I can assure him that just being Irish was reason enough. That and being poor was often sufficient.

Jail, hopefully. How many Bishops were involved exactly?

Each to their own personal crusade. I was simply testing the strength of the argument from individual probability, which I find lacking.

Ok, that's two. Jail for them, I would hope. I would not call the whole Church condoning or enabling child abuse.

The church is composed of hundreds of thousands of priests and despite popular prejudice it doesn't not speak with one (the Pope's) voice. Portugal and Spain have legalized gay marriage, have progressive abortion rights, there is no grumbling about condom use, etc. Both majority Roman Catholic and in Portugal's case more than 90% so last time I checked. I also never had anyone disrespect my position as an atheist.

So, no, the Church is not a simple monolithic entity that can be said to have "covered it up wilfully" because a minority of priests and Bishops did so. And if it did speak with one voice, then the Pope did indeed condemn and apologize for what happened.

Yes, that is exactly what you were saying!

Child abuse has been going on for centurys not decades, with Mom, Dad, uncles, aunts, etc., etc., involved!!

Do you think there is less child abuse in other religions? Because you haven't heard much about it yet, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Lacking compared to what? A view shaped by sensationalist headlines?

Inadequate to address the serious and quite interesting topic of institutional abuse.

You do know child abuse is not limited to any one Country, Race, or Religion.

Child abuse is world wide. You may want to investigate and look at other areas of the world where it happens on a daily basis, with government either in that country or other countries not doing a damn thing about it.

Lets STOP CHILD ABUSE EVERYWHERE!

You know the expression you are your neighbours keeper!

What part do you play in trying to stop child abuse?
