I usually start by saying "Best of luck to you, my friend." but recently I've changed that to "Enjoy the game, my friend", since yes, there's really no luck in chess. That's what makes poker so aggravating.

Wow! Nicest thing anyone's said about me in a long time. Thanks!
Just for the record, Mr. Grice and I have met on the field of battle four times. The first two times my rating was lower and I think he underestimated me and moved a little too quickly (at least that's why I lose games I shouldn't lose). He was gracious in defeat. I never know the apropriate response to the greeting "good luck"?
Should I say thank you?
Why are you wishing me luck? Why do you want me to be lucky?
Should I offer an equally shallow saluatation?
I'd rather be win by skill not luck thanks.

So I'm siding with No1 in the dispute above.
Fiesta definetely goes on the list of charming and amusing players!
As for wishing an opponet good luck, it is simple good manners. A courteous response is thanks or good luck to you.
Part of the reason luck is needed in a game is sometimes it is pure blind luck that I see a checkmate developing for me or against me....and I have a slight tendencey to throw my queen away and pure blind luck is what saves her.....
I even wish that my opponet play well. I learn more and enjoy the game more...

I always start a game by saying: "Have a good game."
Winning doesn't bother me.
I can honestly say that I've not met one rude person during a game yet. Even people who I cross swords with on the fora (like Chancremechanic and Slimjim) are absolutely polite, friendly and funny during matches.
I love you all.
