Hey that reminds me. Did the chesire cat go on to beat you?
He's beaten me before, while I was having a very rough night and making some quick moves. He's a good player though, not saying he couldn't have beaten me anyway, and a nice guy. But I think you're talking about our tourney games together, in which case no, I won those (and the tourney 🙂). And then I had him lick the bottom of my shoe.

Just recently I've played some charming players - that is, players who have been graceful in both defeat and victory. I'd like to name check a few, as I feel they deserve it:

- The Plumber (special mention - the most graceful resignation message I've ever received)
- Dave Branagan
- stephenwale
- Malinga

Way to go, guys - it was a pleasure playing you.
resignation message - are they sending that with their final move (resign)? Curious because I almost never "view board" when I see "You won".

There are often messages when people resign. I've suggested in Site Ideas before that a little speech bubble should appear next to the game on the My Games Page when a message has been sent.

The only time I played no1marauder I wished him good luck and he ignored me.
I never know the apropriate response to the greeting "good luck"?

Should I say thank you?

Why are you wishing me luck? Why do you want me to be lucky?

Should I offer an equally shallow saluatation?

I'd rather be win by skill not luck thanks.

In other internet chats you will be greeted by a/s/l? (age sex location) - Noone ever shows that much interest here. If you want to play in silence say nothing. If you want to be polite say Hi, Enjoy the game. But Good Luck or worse still GL are redundant lazy expressions that don't mean anything.

So I'm siding with No1 in the dispute above.

I always say good luck back. Luck is part of the game; if the other player slips up, their bad, if you do, your own bad. It's polite, and I always try to answer to an opening message. Sometimes it carries on into the game.

I usually start by saying "Best of luck to you, my friend." but recently I've changed that to "Enjoy the game, my friend", since yes, there's really no luck in chess. That's what makes poker so aggravating.

Ya jerks.

I played a game where I wished the opponent luck. he said he did'nt believe in luck, so I replied " die well". In my belief (nordic) this is actually a better salutation to another warrior as you enter battle. He never replied much after that, so I decided maybe not to use it anymore.

Die well jerks

I would like to name check Normal Reaction and Pareto.

Half an hour ago Normal Reaction offered a draw and rematch after I blundered.
Pareto remembered my wife was due to give birth from a game six months previously and rechallenged me to check everything was ok.

Neither player subscribes or hangs out in the forums, but I feel but deserve a mention here. Your manners are impeccable.

I wish my opponents "good luck" also, and never thought of it in those terms. I'm going to switch to "break a leg".

Wow! Nicest thing anyone's said about me in a long time. Thanks!

Just for the record, Mr. Grice and I have met on the field of battle four times. The first two times my rating was lower and I think he underestimated me and moved a little too quickly (at least that's why I lose games I shouldn't lose). He was gracious in defeat. The last two games he was a bit more careful, and this time it was I who moved too quickly (part of my 160+ ratings slide of the last few weeks).

After I recover my senses (at least I hope I do), I'll have to throw down the gauntlet and challenge you to a tie-breaker.
