In the real world? Probably. People judge everyone based on everything they hear about them. You may think someone is the greatest person in the world and once someone says that they are gay or something out of the ordinary things suddenly change. I don't think it helps my cause, I ride a bike to college. I talk to many people, I am very good at keeping a good conversation going, once I introduced that I bike to school when people asked how I get to class so early people treated me different. Even after the fact that I tell them I drive too just not to school or work!! If you are worried about popularity chess is not something you should play. Learn to talk about your interests freely, if someone is scared off, well they must have been a douchebag anyway. This is how you meet real people not fake people.
Originally posted by kmac27When I decided to cycle into work in London (I've since moved out of London) it was the best transport decision I have ever made. I got an extra free 45 mins of daily exercise (I treated it as such and cycled as fast as I could on a heavy mountain bike), it took approx. 23 mins door to door instead of 45 mins, it was much better in the summer than being in an overcrowded train with sweaty pasengers and in the winter although I arrived wet, once showered and changed at work I was lot better off than those having to walk from the station in the rain. Although I was already quite fit my waist still eventually went down from 32" to 30" (after about 6 months). Everybody used to say that they wish they could get around to cycling in but even if they somehow had a problem with it as far as I'm concerned it's their problem not mine. I say do whatever suits you, not what suits others (within reason of course). I carried on cycling in despite getting knocked over 3 times until I changed jobs and no longer could do it.
