Their once was a man with the blues,
playing a game others thought he should loose,
then with a move a pawn,
the night became dawn,
and checkmate was made in 5 moves

Not so good at these myself (although I'll give it a think).

Here's an interesting link, though: http://www.edcollins.com/chess/limerick.htm

Ah, you're welcome. I just can't help helping.

Still can't make one up of my own, though. What, exactly, rhymes with 'en prise'?!

I'll pirp your Queen around
'Till checkmate has been found.
A pirp who plays chess
Can cause quite a mess.
Smack! Smack! is the tell-tale sound.

Which begs an interesting question: How does one pronounce it, officially?

A pirp in the street
stands on his feet
the entire day
sees no way
his queens to feed

Aha!

There was a chessplayer from Kuwait
Who had the black queen in a state
On a wing and a prayer
She retreated a square
Leading to a nice three move checkmate

I believe it's "orn preez" if that's what you're referring to. 😉

It is indeed. Thank you. I've personally always pronounced it "on preezay", but recently I heard someone at my chess club pronounce it "on preeyay"

Perhaps I should just say "able to be captured without sufficient compensation". It's more of a mouthful, but at least I know where I stand.

There once was a pawn on f4,
Who conscientiously objected to war.
And with tears of despair,
After white played the Bird,
He threw himself onto his sword.
