What is the difference between a chess data base, and a chess engine? Why is the data base legal to use and the engine is not?
Using a database for the first four or five moves brings you up to scratch with the player who can remember all that stuff.
Using an engine .. that's just cheating.
Originally posted by orangutanThanks, so an engine just kind of does the thinking for you?

An engine gives you the best move in any given situation. Which means you aren't playing chess, the engine is - you're just moving the pieces around the board for it.
A database just shows a comparison of moves from a given situation - usually just the opening of a game. Even if you continuously copy the most common moves, you're still deciding which moves to make.
Originally posted by Daemon SinTechnically, you are deciding which move to make. If you just copy the moves without knowing why they are played that way, you are not playing, you are playing somebody elses moves.

Nor is there any difference between using a data-base, an engine or getting 12 friends to sit around your monitor and help you.
Nor is there any difference between being schitzophrenic and having voices tell you what to do.
It's hypocrisy. Clear and simple.
Feeble minded TOSsers wagging their finger while they download their music, smoke their marijuana and lie to their girlfriends.
Screw them. And screw them rightiously!

Are you simple?
There's nothing wrong with downloading music, if there's nothing wrong with cheating while playing chess.
Your choice big boy.
I just think that you used a bad analogy that's all.
PS Thanks for calling me big boy, but I think this huge distortion of the truth completely destroys all of your credibility.
