Originally posted by Phlabibitwell, because wat they call Gravy is something similar to what we eat here... We call it in Italy "ragù" and is typical from Bologna... it is not just tomato souce... tomato is just an ingredient... a good ragù must cook forf a longer period nof time... depending on how much it is... and on how fat is the meat you use.... and a suggestion... you should eat either with Fettuccine (it's a long pasta little larger than spaghetti) or torettlini with meat inside...
I've a large number of Italians where I am, and they call tomato sauce "Gravy".
Very confusing, because I like chicken with gravy but NOT with a red sauce.
P-
but i understand that is confusing

If you go to the US looking for good Irish cheese then you must have forgotten almost everything you knew.

better than the crap i found in american supermarkets.
cathedral is a decent english chedder, last time i was in asda they sold it...
Seriously, Britain has amazing cheeses but you don't even find a sniff of them in a major supermarket. Passable, maybe, but not even close to the real thing.
Originally posted by Palynkai was making a comparison with the american supermarkets, it might not be the best we have to offer but you can get a decent cheese at a supermarket here, not the case in the states. plus i wouldn't be surprised if these great deli cheeses were mostly imported, not the case here.

Do not tell me you visited every market in every state in the US. It would be like me looking at your car and your neighbor's car and saying all the cars in Europe are junks.
The markets in the next state over are even different than the markets in my state. Cross the country and they're totally different than anything imaginable here in the east.
Stuff it Trev!

You can taste everything and I even met one of the producers there once. I asked about a cheese and the guy said "Let me get the guy who did it". Good stuff and very fairly priced.

They have this variation of Stilton called Stichelton, which they make with unpasteurized milk, which is pure delight. Apparently they can't call it Stilton because of the unpasteurized milk but I even prefer this variant. It's blue but incredibly smooth (but not in a greasy way).
Give it a go if you're there. There are other places, but overpriced and maybe even not as good.

And it is our fault that our milk supply is low quality. We allow the genetic manipulations, stress and massive drugging of the cattle we force to overproduce the muck that passes as milk. We're right back where we were when Updike wrote The Jungle.
