so we decided to get rid of this peice of s**t, and get a new comp. went to pc world and found a really nice one that costs £750, had everything we need but it wasnt in stock so we're waiting til its there so we can get it.. but is there anywhere better to buy that comp or a similar spec from? im sure pc world wont mug us off price-wise too much but maybe somewhere cheaper? the spec on the comp was perfect so i dont need somewhere that custom builds or has more selection, just good price. it was a compaq, by the way. ta.

You can enter the exact spec you are about to recieve and can see what the search pulls up. Some of them are sold by a "Store Seller" so they accept returns etc, some even offer guarantees etc
I bet you can get the same spec for below £500
😉
thanks for your help guys. we spoke to someone who knows our needs and also a lot about computers, and a family friend so not trying to sell us something over the odds, and he said that the computer was better than we needed but a worthwhile investment as we are unlikely to replace the comp any time soon at all, so itll last a long time and is vista etc, and the spec is good enough to be decent for a long time. we're going to go ahead but your thoughts were helpfull aswel thanks.

AND
Never buy anything from Dixons or PC World! Especially not their extended warranty

Originally posted by mazziewagsorry, but as a mcse (microsoft engineer) and a+ technician i think you're making a mistake; firstly, the other user is right, don't ever buy from the big pc brands; they will always charge more; what do you actually need this pc for? £799 is a hell of a lot now for a pc... are you into hardcore gaming, or video edited, or music making? if not, for that price you should be!

it's a shame you didnt post the spec but with all fairness i get the impression you dont know it, you've just been told it's what you need. if you already have a pc all you need to buy is a tower unit; you already have the monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer etc... i bought one for a friend recently, 2gb ram, 160gb hd, 3200ghz processor for under £250.
lastly, anything with vista installed at the moment i would hold off until a service pack is released for the new os; ms are discontinuing their support for xp soon, but it's still the best out of the bunch at the mo
one final point, you said you don't want a custom built pc, all pc's are custom built anyway; all the big brands lease out the construction of components to third party companies - that though, is not in anyway a bad thing; i think even dell (who use proprietary parts) buy intel chipsets and they dont write the bios either
