No one who has not had considerable experience of OTB chess and played competitively (and has, as a result, got a rating) would be able to suddenly start playing on RHP at that level.

There are not many Italian players rated that highly either.
Anyone who has an engine which can play at the 2500 level must be an IM at the very minimum?

His identity has been made public before and is well known by many at RHP. It is not contested.

As for "anyone who can play at the 2,500 level must be an IM at the very minimum", that might be correct - if you add the rider "or be using an engine".

This thread has moved into an area I'm not equipped to comment on. However, without confirming the name as being correct, I have done some research and found Ironman31 to be a FIDE International Arbiter. This to me suggests a familiarity with the game which goes beyond needing to cheat to win games. Why would somebody in this position cheat? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Edit: While there's no record of his rating or status, google has thrown up several hits on his name which associate him with reputable chess organisations.

Well my tooth still hurts but just wanted to comment that there is no way to even know if this is the same Ironman, he could have easily stole his name knowing the person was an FIDE arbiter. For instance just because David Tebb uses that name on RHP does this make him the real David Tebb?? Of course not.

Yes, he is a FIDE Arbiter. That doesn't mean he is a strong player. In fact, all the arbiters that I've known have been very weak players. For instance a guy who plays for a team in my local league is a FIDE Arbiter. He has a BCF rating of 123. I wouldn't expect someone like that to come on this site and play like a Grandmaster!

As to why he felt the need to cheat? Only Ironman can answer that.

I know I have jumped to at least one conclusion and you have put me right on that but I still have the confusing matter of the word of a friend, the vote of confidence of somebody who knows Ironman31 and is adamant he is for real. Of course that's neither your problem nor RHP's but while it doesn't really matter, I feel from a personal point of view there are things left to answer. But then, aren't there always?

PS Are you the 'real' David Tebb?

Well, there are a few people on the site who claim to know Ironman in person and presumably could vouch for his real name. Just as there are several people on the site who know me in real life. Of course, how would these people be able to prove who they are?

For the purposes of concrete proof, I always pay for my subscription by credit card and Russ knows my email address.

But coming back to Ironman. Why would someone bother to impersonate an ordinary player, who irrelevantly happens to be a FIDE arbiter? If you're going to impersonate someone, you might as well make it an IM or GM.

I hope you knew I was joking. Anyway, yes, Ironman31 is most likely the person many of us believe him to be. It just remains for some to question if his playing ability was what for a while the rating said.

Thats true but thinking about it its not hard to impersonate someone. I was just thinking about it. All you have to do is add a second name to your credit card (someone who is allowed to use your card) just a name maybe David Tebb for instance. David Tebb is now allowed to use my card for purchases, just like adding a second address. Go to a site pay for something with the card and use the name David Tebb since you have authorized this name to use your card. Get a new email addy, DavidTebb@gmail.com or how about making a new name at your job? At my old job I had access to that and could make new names. DavidTebb@njfpg.org. Just like that, I'm David Tebb and can prove it. πŸ™‚

OK, will you join my clan?. Gluk'oza, cool Russian singer with an attitude. Terrible music but I like it, and so far, on RHP, I'm the only one.

I guessed you were joking, but I wasn't sure. Bridge Player also asked the same question, as have other people in the past. I can't assume that everyone was joking.

Thanks, I guess you can never tell without the benefit of seeing facial expression and hearing tone of voice.

But wouldn't the primary name on the credit card be the one that shows up in Russ's records? I don't know. You obviously know a lot more about identity theft than I do!

I suppose if it came to the crunch and Russ demanded absolute proof of my identity, I could always hop on a train to London and show up on his doorstep with a few documents like my birth certificate and a pocket chess set. He'd have to pay my fare though!
