Well I am not sure how to proceed, I went to the mint site and the file is linuxmint-8. ...[text shortened]... I do? Is an iso file an executable? How do I get it into the system so it actually runs?
zeeblebot explained what to do.
.iso files are image files. The file is an exact image of a bootable CD.

You can use this app: http://www.imgburn.com/
to burn it to CD, although the software you usually use to burn CD/DVD should also have the option to write the image to disk.

Blimey! Installing Linux isn't worth this much time and effort.

You might as well give up now, save you all the bother of getting disappointed and switching back to Windows.

Sorry, messed up title. Was wondering if there are some processes in Windows that don't show up in precesses or performance in the task manager? I am presently deleting a bunch of programs in an effort to figure out why the comp is running so slow. If it takes like 20 minutes to load windows doesn't it sound logical to assume something is going on in the ba ...[text shortened]... ou can download that can show the TRUE CPU load and maybe what is going on in the background?
To answer the original question - try downloading Process Manager from the Microsoft site, it's a more comprehensive version of the Task Manager processes tab and will give you more information on what is running on your PC. Also, make sure that the tick box for Processes from All Users is ticked in the Task Manager Process tab when looking. Start up programs are best found if you type "msconfig" from the Run command (Winkey+R shortcut), although this may be dodgy if you don't know what you are doing. I use CCleaner at work, so will add my recommendation to the others in this thread, but have also used Glary Utilities successfully too. You may also want to have a look at your boot.ini file, but again, research is recommended. To be perfectly honest, in situations like this, I would normally reinstall my operating system, but as I have the luxury of never saving any date on my OS (C:\) disk, or ever running other installed applications on this either), and because I should know what I'm doing!!), this is never much of a hassle for me.

Thanks for all the info guys, I can't do it right now, wife had double knee replacement, taking care of her for the past 5 weeks and another couple of months to go. Haven't even gotten to record music lately, only picked up the guitar a couple of times. I even found a great deal at a pawn shop, I got an Alesis Studio 24 mixer for a hundred bucks, it has direct outs which finally matches my RME hammerfall multiface I/O, so I can have a real 8 track machine finally. But can't even fire it up yet except one time a month ago, taking care of an invalid is hard work. I had to even make a spreadsheet for all her meds, a complicated process in itself. So when I say my plate is full, I really mean full.
When all this is over and she is walking again, I fully intend to do linux, am tired of this slow running comp. For now, I am going to go to all the links and bookmark them so I have them in my system. Thanks again.
So all the links are bookmarked and I copied all the relevant posts to word, its a few pages long but a great tutorial! Thanks for sure. Will tell all when I get time to actually do the work. Don. BTW, I do live fairly close to philly, near Allentown, about 60 miles north.

At least I figured out how to get to RHP quickly: I downloaded free Avast and it comes with Chrome. I made RHP my homepage in chrome, so I have 3 browsers up now, FF, IE and chrome. When I hit Chrome, it comes up to RHP in a couple of seconds. It takes ten times longer on both FF and IE, don't know why.

I am the one to do it here. My kids are more into video games than computers.

P.S., i have been looking at media players (small boxes to display videos and photos on the TV). some will download from netflix, etc. i don't use netflix, just want to access home vids and pics over the local network. so i finally settled on Asus O!Play Air. just ordered it. your wife being immobile she might be interested in something similar. if you need netflix etc. might look at Roku or similar players. i couldn't see that Roku would access my server for my own vids, so i didn't get it.
