Sorry, messed up title. Was wondering if there are some processes in Windows that don't show up in precesses or performance in the task manager? I am presently deleting a bunch of programs in an effort to figure out why the comp is running so slow. If it takes like 20 minutes to load windows doesn't it sound logical to assume something is going on in the background that slows things down? I ran AVG pro and it found no threats, root kits, trojans, viruses and the like. Why doesn't the performance tab show all the cpu percentages? It runs slow but the performance tab might say 7%, 12%, something like that with occasional jumps to 40 or so, when some major programs are not running like defrag or something. If it is running only 5 % or so, it should not run slow. So are there programs you can download that can show the TRUE CPU load and maybe what is going on in the background?

Does Windows really take 20 mins to load? Which version?

ccleaner? Real easy and I liked the results when I used it on an older comp I have.

Yup, this may be the only way from previous experience with sonhouse.
He probably went on a bunch of sites and got registry tweaks, registry cleaners, system performance enhancers and clicked on all the "BOOST YOUR PC PERFORMANCE!" ads he saw... all in all, he probably did everything he should NOT have done.

sonhouse, please refer to the last thread you started (I think). I posted a long post of what you should do.
If this doesn't work, you may have to go the format route...

Try a free scan for viruses with trend micro which will delete any virus as well, if none try another free product advanced system care.

I doubt its anything to do with viruses.

My money's on a combination of an excessively large profile, too many startup programs, large prefetch folder, fragged harddrive and messy registry.

What is the prefetch folder? What does it do to system speed? What size is good, Win XP SP3, 2 gigs ram, single core CPU.
I did get rid of 'fix it utilities' and AVG pro and one registry cleaner trial that only supposedly repaired 100 problems then asked for purchase. Cleaning out a bunch of other programs also, it does run faster now, I use diskeeper for defrag, I don't let it go that long between defrags.
So can anyone answer my original question? When the system is running slow and the performance meter is showing say 10% CPU usage, it would seem clear other stuff is running in the background that is not included in that 10% figure.
Are there programs that will show the REAL usage of the CPU regardless of what sneaky asss program is in the background?

I am glad you guys can feel so superior when I ask questions, so I get the point. You don't want to be bothered so I will use other resources to learn this stuff.

no there isn't.

and I believe the fact that your machine hangs already in the bootup rules out everything on application level. it's either corrupted OS (so reinstall it) or broken HW (prolly the hd). you didn't really give any relevant info so it's quite impossible to give more help. not to mention waste of time, as I've never seen you react to proper advice yet in these billions of "does anyone know how" threads. hence: reinstall your OS.

damnit, once again I got suckered in to actually waste time by trying to explain something to you.

it would suffice if you started paying any attention to what people tell you. it's really frustrating to waste time by explaining things to you, when you never listen. there's been dozens of these threads by you, maybe 100+. and you never learn. which makes me 99% sure you're doing it deliberately, just to waste people's time & efforts. for the 1% I'm bothering to write this.

I'm with wormwood, I'd be more inclined to offer help if I thought you'd managed to garner even a small amount of understanding about PCs (above the basic turn on and press key), from the numerous threads and previous advice posted. Wht you need is a computer basics course, not an individual problem solving pointer which, on it's own is merely stirring your already choppy knowledge pool.

Don't worry, I won't be bothering your precious time ever again. I get the point. Sorry I woke you up.
If you all had on your plate what I have going on here you would maybe be a bit more sensitive.
