I agree with kellsy. Recently in Banff, a young woman was raped, beaten and left for dead. Her family lives in Ontario and had to pay their own way to Alberta to be at her side. They were not well off and have to cover their own expenses. Whearas the guy they arrested for the crime is in custody, and gets free meals and adequate living conditions. Als ...[text shortened]... n what a lot of honest law-abiding citizens have. That almost makes me want to commit a crime.

What I don't understand is why do they give violent criminals thousands of dollars worth of gym equipment so that they can become stronger and commit even more violent offences when they get out. I can't afford a gym membership!
They eat better/more meals than I do, they get more TV stations than I can afford and they never have to worry about the power/gas/water bills. Prison doesn't seem all that bad an option when I think of it.
I recently heard that here in Canada when they release you they have to provide you with money! Only $50 or something, but still! Enough to buy some bullets for that gun you know they have stashed away.
Convicted criminals should have no rights or privelages for the duration of their sentence. I like my criminals weak and dissorientated when they're released.

Bring back the chain gangs and make them work, showing that prison is not a soft option.

Anyway most women prisoners are there for petty things like shoplifting on a first offence and fine non-payment. Also everyone in prison is required to do some type of job, hard labour doesn't work - you end up with kids boasting that they've been through the harshest regimes and released unrehabilitated.
Originally posted by AmauroteI have asked the question on here before, anyone here ever been in jail? I have for 48 hrs. (nothing serious, misdemeanor only) I about went nuts. I had 3 feet of space between me and the next inmate. There were 14 of us in a cell 20 feet x 15 feet. (county lockup , not prison) YOU HAVE NO FREEDOM! You eat when they tell you. You get hungry, tough. Wait till breakfast. Slept on a thin mat on a concrete floor with a roll of toilet paper for a pillow. We did not have room to even walk around. Had just enough space to stand up. and take two steps. It is not a good life believe me.

By the same token however, locking up repeat offenders for serious crimes such as pedophilia and murder insures that they won't be able to offend again.
The problem with this country is we lock up violent offenders like Martha Stewart and let gang thugs walk.
Originally posted by ETeachIt depends what you mean by "been in jail", really. I've worked there for nearly four years now, have regular daily contact with inmates in four prison sites, and yes, it is not pleasant (although the cellular stats you're giving are totally aberrant in a UK context, I know jails are distinct from the US federal system, but even so, it sounds like what you are describing is more like a police cell than a permanent pad). The paedophiles you are describing certainly do not live in those kinds of conditions, and for the most part they may be serving less than fifteen years. Shutting them up in a dark hole seems like a great option, but if you're going to do that you have to reflect on what you would be like if you were released from a miserable dungeon after fifteen years without treatment - my suggestion is that there is a good chance that far from being rehabilitated, you would be extremely angry.
