It's very rare that a cryptic clue will only be one word. That tends to make it a 'literal' clue and you only need a good dictionary to solve it. Cryptic puzzles require an 'understanding' of the 'criterium' and some very lateral thinking. I've spent years compiling and solving them so not much gets past me.
