They can have nearly magical powers. Or put another way, uttering or hearing them can bring about reactions that go way beyond the effect of random sounds..

But I think a curse, under one definition being a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one, has at most, coincidental or psychological effect, the latter not to be sneezed at.
