I haven't slept for 5 days, I'm just lying there...lying there...laying there...whatever...

In 6 days time I'm off to the neurological department of a hospital in the Hague. It's a sleep-clinic and they're gonna figure out what's wrong. I have to keep a sleep-diary and I'm not allowed to look at the clock.

What on earth am I supposed to look at in the middle of the night, when it's dark and the only thing you can see is the bloody digital clock??? HUH?

I can't say my chess playing is going too well. What is interesting to see, in case you are interested, is my chess chart thingy on "My profile". You can roughly see what periods I'm sleeping well and what periods I've obviously not been sleeping well.

Well, that's me. I've vented. I'm off back to bed (where it's warm) to wait for an oppertune moment to have breakfast and go to work.

Party on.

Turn the clock around, cover it in duct tape, unplug it.

Is there any correlation between your sleep cycles and your drug use?

That is, do you think you might be having some sort of residual side-effects from them that prevent you from getting restful (if any) sleep? Or, conversely, perhaps you've developed some sort of psychological dependency upon them that allows you to relax enough to sleep only when having used them?

Just a few thoughts based on what little I know about you...

I wish you all the luck in the world with this. I've known quite a few people who struggle with sleeping, and you have my deepest sympathy and I hope that the doctors find out what's wrong and can help you.

I don't believe there is.

I've got bad periods and good periods. During the good periods marijuana doesn't influence the sleep at all. Alcohol does. That always makes me sleep crap.

When I've got a bad period, marijuana seems to help me go to sleep, but it doesn't keep me asleep. I'll still wake up after an hour or two. Alcohol is really nasty. There's nothing worse than not sleeping for 3 days, getting drunk and having a hang-over on top of it all.

I have noticed, however, that if I'm drunk and take 20mg of Tamazepan (medication that helps you get to sleep) that I'll sleep the usual 5 hours (that's about how long it usually knocks me out for) and wake up without a hang-over.
This leads me to believe that there's more to a hang-over than just dehydration and poisoning. I reckon sleep-deprivation (anybody who's drunk doesn't sleep well, seemingly) has something to do with it as well.

Try cookies made from hash rather than weed.

When you sleep drunk, your body is going nuts trying to get rid of all the poison. Therefore, even though your brain might shut down, your body gets no rest at all.

Dunno where you live, if it's a bad area then this might not be such a good idea. I have problems sleeping (well it used to be really bad, but nowadays it's liveable with) and the only thing I found that helped consistently was running at night and then having a bath. I have the benefit of living in the sort of place where this is possible, and if I couldn't sleep I'd just get up and go run like a b*%&ard for an hour, when I came back it usually made me tired enough to relax into a bath and then fall asleep in bed after. Obviously this isn't going to suit everyone (especially if the idea of doing exercise revolts you), but might be worth a try.

Good luck anyway, I know how hard insomnia can be.

Shavi, my thoughts are with you. I hope they are able to do something for you. Since I have been online, I have met alot of insomniacs. I have some trouble with it myself, as does Alex.
Good Luck and sweet dreams :-)

Good luck...maybe you should stop drugs for a while. That might help. or stop being aorund smokers/druggies for a while. See if it helps.

If it doesn't, you'll probably go quietly insane, and end up not caring if you sleep or not.

Man, and I thought I was an insomniac. At least I do sleep every night, even if it does take me a good three hours to drop off.

Well, I know that not being able to sleep is a real bummer. I hope you will get better soon.

..... and ..... erm ..... get rid of the drugs, the booze and eventually the Temazepam. They are very disruptive in more than one way .... and ... erm ... ahum
... obey the doctors, Guppy Poo ..... I wish you strength and "beterschap".

Dude, go to the gym. Lift some weights. Drink lots of water. Take some Valerian root. Works like a charm.

Cheers!

I can sympathize, Shavi. I normally function fine on 4-6 hours, but sometimes I can't sleep for days on end. After the second day, there's real euphoria, but then it starts to suck.

Consuming a very large amount of caffeine about 6 hours before I want to sleep works for me, as does being in a very brightly lit place before I want to sleep. The other weekend, I couldn't sleep at all, so I just got on the tube and drifted around all night, which was sufficiently exhausting.

Failing that kind of thing, we should start an Insomniac's Room on RHP, where we pledge to turn our monitors to the brightest setting.

Seriously, good luck with that.
