Actually I did a deployment with a CG ship in our battle group long before 9/11. We had a cutter go with us in '99. I'm not sure when they started sending CG to the Gulf, but it was long before the Deptment of Homeland Security.
I also did not know that you gu ...[text shortened]... to my co-workers. That's pretty damn funny.
Have you been hanging out at the Trophy Lounge?
Been to the Trophy Lounge a time or two. We were DOT during peacetime and would have fallen under in times of a "great" war such as WW2, but since 9-11, we have been the Department of Homeland Security. Yeah, since we are a military branch, we get Geneva convention standing. If you ever see another presidential funeral, there will be a CG Honor Guard assisting. I use the Navy Times paygrade charts to see what you and I make... 😉. Since we are not DOD, many people, even current military people, refuse to count us as a military branch; that's OK, because we like to keep a low profile and take silent pride in our abilities, if called upon, to respond to any national emergency that happens to pop up.....Bottom line?= I get paid the same basic pay as any E-7 in any branch of the military, same retirement benefits, same EVERYTHING......fair winds.....

Abu Graib as the My Lai Massacre. The similarities go on.

But of course things turned out peachy back then and I'm sure they'll do so again. 🙄[/b]
Please explain how the atrocities of the My Lai Massacre compare to the indiscretions of the Abu Graib prisoner camp situation.

Please look up the word "similarity" i.e. "equivalence" and provide your dissertation on the subject. I'm sure you are just squirming to enlighten the world ...

Your anxious audience awaits.

I wasn't claiming they were even in the same order of magnitude (looking back at my post I didn't make that clear) but the fact that American troops broke the human rights convention and then tried to pretend they didn't in both cases is the same.

If something in the same order of magnitude to My Lai happened in Iraq how long before we hear about it? It wasn't until November 1969 that the public started to hear of My Lai (that's nearly two years later) and isn't it concievable that without some kind of whistle blower these kind of incidents would never come to light?

Also indiscretions at Abu Graib? I'd call torture and prisoners dying in mysterious circumstances more than indiscretions. It wasn't all naked pyramids and mispelling Rapeist in magic marker on people.

What do you call the torture and the mysterious deaths of their own people inflicted by the same (althought differents sects of) people who live alongside them in the same land?

That being said, I have always said, and still say, we had no business getting in there. A president I did not vote for nor, do I sanction the actions of, foisted this upon us to begin with. I can still remember when he flew in on the fighter jet "John Wayne" style and landed on the carrier deck of that ship and declared "Mission Accomplished". I believe that was three months into the war. It is now three YEARS later. Once again, we have accomplished nothing. We started a civil war. There will be no more terroism in America. There is no need for them to come to our country. We are sending our lambs to slaughter in theirs.
And as far as hairy naked men stacked into a pyramid and ruled by some sadistic chick ... Seems to me that you would be quite accustomed to this ;o) (said in jest).

"But they did it first!"
That's really a justification for human rights abuses? It never flew with my mother let me tell you.

You're right, that old one holds no water as as excuse. But the "I was only following orders" makes it all alright as far as I'm concerned.
