If someone had told me 20 years ago that cutting out alcohol, sugar, potato, bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals and fruit … and consuming instead, fatty red meat, oily fish, a little bacon, butter, cheese, avocados, eggs, sea salt and lots of green veg would make me feel much healthier, lose weight, have less food cravings, lower appetite and experience improved mental wellbeing, I would not have believed them.

I do now.

Very happy for you, my friend. Yes sugar, in all its clever disguises, is the enemy.

You rarely see an overweight old person :-)

Fruit?

It's good that you're only cutting out potato and not potatoes. A life without potatoes... Impossible.

Great that you’ve discovered what works best for you.

The older we get the more we need to get serious about our diet & lifestyle to maintain our physical & mental wellbeing. When I ever had a pain I used to think ‘Do I need to see a doctor?’ These days I first think ‘What have I eaten, done or not done to cause this?’

We have far more control over our health than we realise.

Not all fruit but most; the complex sugar content is horrendous; it gets broken down into glucose and still messes with you. Surprisingly for me bananas are one of the worst culprits. Sugar is as bad as drugs, in fact I am now regarding it as literally that.

What about my credo? Everything in moderation.🤔 Oh, hang on. I guess like most things…what works for one may not fir another…carry on…with what works best for you.👍

@diver
I eliminated all animal produce from my diet 12 years ago. I try to grow as much veg/herbs/fruit and plants as I can and I make sure I cook my meals from scratch. I've noticed a lot of communities setting up 'incredible edible' veg gardens which I think is great. I avoid ultra processed food at all costs.

You’re from a healthier gene pool than most so you can get away with moderation 🙂

OK, let me clarify a few things for you. I have been diabetic for the last 5 years. There are several things that you mentioned that are true. Processed sugar in all forms is bad. However, fructose (fruit) is not altogether bad if you eat the right fruits. Blueberries, black berries, strawberries, , raspberries are all pretty good for you. I eat them EVERY morning. They contain anti-oxidants and other good things for you. The fructose can be offset by the introduction of protein. Also nuts and greek yogurt are very good additions to you diet for the probiotic effects. Bananas are a bit testier. If you eat them while they are green and somewhat hard, they do not possess the high sugar content. As they ripen, they become an enemy to avoid. Of course there are perils to eating green bananas as they tend to constipate you, so moderation is the key.

Fresh vegetables need to be a staple of your diet. broccoli, cauliflower, legumes, spinach, kale (I hate kale), squash and brussel sprouts are all good for you. They are good as long as you don't destory their values with the way you prepare them. On the other hand, peas are too high in carbs, carrots are too high in sugar, and certain beans are high in carbs a s well. Corn is too high in carbs.
Romaine and arugula are good forms of lettuce, icebreg is garbage.

Carbs are your real nemesis. Carbs break down into sugar. Potatoes, pastas and rice are big culprits. But here is a trick that I discovered that really does work. I know it works because I monitor my glucose constantly with an electronic sensor. If you cook your pasta or potatoes or rice, and then refrigerate them over night and re-heat them the next day and eat them, it will cut the sugars in HALF!!
My normal glucose level floats between 125-130. If I eat any of those three items freshly prepared, my glucose will soar to 215-225. Now it will come down after a couple of hours, but that isn't good. However, if I consume these items that have been refrigerated, my glucose level will rise to 155-160. This is not once or twice, this is 40-50 times. I told my endocrinologist about this discovery, and she had never heard of this, but she tried it out and confirmed it does work. So, you don't want to over do it, but you can consume it on occasion without the major consequences.

Saturated fats are a no no. However, you do need some level of fat in your diet or you create other problems. Avocados are really good for you as well. Avocado oil is a much beeter substitute over vegetable oil.

You need to really supplement the protien in your diet to balance out the sugar levels as well. Chicken, fish, a moderation of red meat (I limit red meat consumption to once a week). Seafoods are great but you have to deal with mercury levels, microplastic levels and iodine levels. Something is going to get us.

Breads, cakes, cookies, pies....all of those things you love are dead to you now.
Ice cream is another one that bit the dust. You can pick and choose and find some substitutes that aren't as bad for you that will get you by, but, once again, it is all about moderation.

Alcohol is the one that normally causes the greatest shrieks. Pure sugar. Fruit juices are bad, too much added sugar. Canned and bottled soda is horrible. Scoops of sugar in them. I literally drink three things....water, black unsweetened tea, and 2% milk. That is it.

You also need to incorpoarte exercise into your daily routine. If you exercise after eating, you can actually burn off a good portion of what you just ate before it ever becomes part of your bloodstream. But you can't exercise at every meal, Anything you can do to take the pressure off of your liver and your kidneys, you need to do, and this will make you feel better.

After hearing all of this crap and looking at all I had to give up and all the bs you have to go through to be healthy and extend you life, I asked the doctor....."Exactly what is it that I am wanting to live longer for?" They took away everything that tasted good, took away all of the things that were fun to do, and the world is genuinely going into the crapper.....but I will get to enjoy it longer!!

Great post. You seem to be posting from the point of view of the diabetic, and lots of good information there.

In the case of the heart patient and artery blockage, there is a whole bunch of recent information coming out of the medical research, much of which big guns are reluctant to release because they stand to lose. Seed oils is big culprit, and all processed food is a nono. Even soy burgers, vegan meat etc. These products contain chemicals and starches which the body cannot properly process and it ends up in the arteries and it damages the kidneys.

Read up on what they call 'saturated fat'. Apparently some medical researchers are changing their tune. Saturated fat is now good, and it is the only fat that stops or controls dementia and other age related diseases. Oils high in Omega 6 is the bad oil and should be avoided.

Here is an interesting development. Remember how peoples wisdom teeth weer routinely removed? Now apparently that is a bad thing. It appears that wisdom teeth contain stem cells which help in old age to regenerate the body and keep people healthier.

Lots of new developments and lots of old health advice going out the window. Long way to go still.

It seems a bit like the philosophy of the Weight Watchers - being fat is not healthy either and it causes a variety of problems. Certain things are absolutely taboo whereas others are about moderation. It takes discipline and patience. A doctor once said: "Gaining 1 kilo per year doesn't sound much but in 10 years it is 10 kilos extra. Losing weight can be done slowly and still be effective." It has to be consistent.
