I know that China had a lot of problems around that time, but my impression is that it was mostly caused by British attacks.
What effect did the opium itself have?
Read, "The Good Earth"...amazing book.

The only beef I would have about the legalization of the tasty cannabis bud is that it is much easier to afford to smoke it if it remains illegal if you have friends who like to contribute. Legalization would take away the user market and put too much of a burden on the pocket book of those too lazy to grow their own. And everyone knows Cannabis smokers are too lazy and dependent on government funds to actually work for it. Of course I always thought that people who are lazy are lazy by nature and those who aren't aren't and it had little to do with what they smoke. Probably more to do with what they drink and those nasty hangovers.

What? How does legalization make your friends less likely to give you freebies?
Legalization would take away the user market
What does that mean?

I should have said some of the user market. In this case I am saying that if it became legal that more than likely any buyers would have to buy from stores that would monopolize and flood the market so that users would not be able to smoke for free without their own harvest. And by doing so would in many cases make it economically less attractive at the consumer level. I think part of the draw to the product has always been because it is taboo and profitable to the consumer. Take that away and I think part of the market would collapse. Plus I am concerned that too many countries depend on the revenue that comes from it. It could cause world hunger not to mention excessive munchies. So keep it illegal and out of shops, but decriminalize it.

I've read the wole thread in 15 minutes, it was very entertaining.
This is a great topic.
All drugs should be legalized except marijuana because I sell it.
Just kiddin'.
