Dustn, I think part of the reason people are singling you out is the sheer number of games that you play - it means that when you can't play for a few days and get timed out, it's a LOT of games that go at once and the effect is much bigger. The suggestion is that you're over committed fairly regularly.

The only time I've played you was in a tournament. I can't actually remember for sure, but I think you got timed out by the system. I *do* remember seeing your rating already on the slide and asking how many games you'd had running a few days earlier. The answer was 825.

I should hasten to add it doesn't bother me much - obviously it's disappointing when an opponent can't complete a game, but that's life. I'm just trying to interpret what the complaint actually is.

We've really got three issues ongoing in this thread, so a little separation if I may?

1) how to handle player burn-out
Several suggestions have been made: they need to be assessed both in light of the rating crash and the effects of ratings cheats (a few false accounts could be used be to generate a LOT of points wth ease).
2) Is it good manners to repeatedly take the burn-out route?
If you know from past experience that your are likely to take on more games that you can handle given life's ups and downs, are your actions fair to those you are playing?
3) Name and shame
This really should be avoided whenever possible. JW is an obvious exception!

As for my own two pennies, I've played some of the ratings swingers in my time: good games I've enjoyed. Yes, the rating thing does mean you have to take care to avoid them in a dip (which may itself cause tourney slow-down, never a good thing), but on the plus side if you catch them while they're here, they are very fast movers. Its always nice to be almost sure of a move when you log in.

Is there any point to all this typing? I doubt it. A Monday morning ramble.

Thanks very much for allowing me to waste a little more of your time and my own! Regards,

Lets put the record straight ... Your rating has bounced from over 1800 to under 1000 and now it has bounced yet again to 1100. You once proclaimed that you are could potentially be a 2000 player (which i believe).

You are this month most active player with close to 20.000 !!!! moves so i will not accept any argument of yours regarding games you resign on purpose or games you are being timed out.

Fact is that i have currently a Metallica member complaining to me about your ridiculus rating ... Now i dont care a great deal about ratings myself but what you do is just messing up other peoples rating by resigning loads of games and getting timed out in many whilst making 20.000 moves this month

I therefore ask you to do me a favor and either resign your games against Metallica members (so you dont affect my members rating with your poor game management) or stop moving in them until your rating has been restored to a reasonably level. Secondly i would truly appreciate if you start managing your games more efficiently as you simply p*ss people off with your rating when winning against them

Thank you

Regards

Boris

Since CLAN ratings and rankings are involved, don't we all have a bit of a higher responsibility when accepting games? Resigning games?

The all mighty metallica clan, of which the lowest rating i am playing is you from the clan, including games against your top players...hmmm...interesting, you ask me to resign my games. No. Your team is very talented, and my rating, or lossing to me has nothing to do with that, if i even win a game! and you know that of the players, i havent beaten any of them before. So in closing to your clever antics yourself, and the fact that maybe Zumdalf complained, since he or Feivel are the other players i am facing in your clan, that 1900 rated players should not complain against any rating they play no matter who they play, they should learn and accept challenges no matter what because that makes you a good player. And because my rating fell we must whine some more, please save me some cheese! I will not resign, ill wait for my rating to become atleast 1500 before or if i do even beat any of your team? Understand?

The least thing you can do ... stop moving in the Metallica games (make sure you aint get timed out in them though) get your rating to a standard that reflects your chess skill that you possess and finish the games

i just hope that you (a) take that criticism seriously and (b) that you understand that your unreal rating is affecting every single game and player at RHP.

I understand the remarks, and what position you stand by, but Boris, it does not effect every player i play, sorry the 70 games i resigned, they all won! wow! i would have most likely taken atleast 50 of those games! Secondly, the players i beat now, instead of lossing 15, only about 10 of them will lose 22, so in actuality im cheating 7 points from 10 players to boost my rating an extra 70 points. So now instead of earning my 300 rating points to back to 1500 ill be around 1570, besides the fact that i lose games as well, and that will make me around 1515, so grrrrrrr...i so dearly apologize to those 10 players, i will send all you letters of apologies and so much more, and ill try to make your lose as sweet and endearing as i can so that the 7 points will not destroy your lives and that you can smile in the morning!

Boris,

You are implying that Dustin is "wrong" in his actions, but from what I make out he has done absoultely nothing that is against the rules of RHP. He plays a lot of games (anyone who makes 100,000+ moves must!), if he holds of on the games he is loosing to see how high he can get his rating and then gives up on all the games he is losing to start again, is that so different to a lot of people on RHP?

As for mass timeouts, it is not Dustin who takes the timeouts it is the other players on RHP, it is not his fault if 200 people take a timeout against him. There is more to life than RHP, and if Dustin has to get away from the site for a week or so thats up to him - he just has to pay the consequence of getting his ratting hammered. Thats the way the site works.

I am sure Dustin does not want to get timed out in all those games?

Yes, I am also one on those people who only seem to beat Dustin when his rating is around 750, but thats life. I know he might go missing at any time, but I carry on playing him (I have done so ever since I joined RHP a couple of years ago) for one simple reason. I enjoy the games and he is a top bloke to chat away with.

Would I have Dustin in my clan...well thats another matter altogether 🙂

Andrew

i see your point but it is very frustrating for high rated players playing Dustin who is a class player himself and has a rating of 1100 ...

Some people care about their rating and i think that resigning (or getting timed out) on 200 games is just not fair to the RHP community as it affects many ratings

Dustin

i have read your last post and hope you keep your word - thanks -

Like it was said earlier, ratings are there for a reason. Obviously for vanity but then maybe also to make banded tournaments fair. It is not fair for a high rated player to resign their games which affects many players. It may boost a rating of an average player out of their comfort zone and stop them playing in a banded tournament of their own strength. More importantly, however, it makes it hard to judge your own improvement if ratings are all over the place.

There are some players who have obviously resigned a lot of games and have then entered banded tournaments (I really don't know if this applies in this case - I am just talking generally).
That is grossly unfair! There are lots of OPEN tournaments to enter as an alternative!

Again, I don't know the full facts about dustin so I am talking generally and not about him.

Play each game through to the best of your ability.

If everyone did that, ratings would mean something. I would really like to take the ratings here at RHP seriously, because I think they have the potential to add so much more enjoyment to the game. Sadly, at present, they are something of a joke.

Those players who resign games en masse, or allow tens/hundreds of games to time-out should realise that their actions degrade eveyone elses' experience of RHP.

Sure, its only a game, but playing hard is what makes a game fun.
