Dustin

i would openly like to request that you stop messing with your rating by resigning literally hundreds of games.

you are a strong - very strong player who i would picture around 1600-2000. Currently you are rated at 1100. i have a couple of games against you and am getting annoyed to play some one very strong with such a rating. it has not been the first time that your rating has been that low and other peoples rating suffer considerably when you win against people rated 1100.

please adjust your games to your personal needs and be more careful in the future before taking hundreds of games as i dont fancy playing you with an 1100 rating (or less then 1000 as it had been in the past)

I have had several games recently where I have played against players who are around 800 points below my rating, but whose ratings are normally about 600-700 points higher than their present rating but find themselves at this low rating due to either loads of resignations due to overload of games or loads of timeouts for the same reason.
This has had a major knock on effect on mine and others ratings. As when I play an 1100-1200 whose real reting is abot 1800-1900 it certainly doesn't benefit me even when I win nevermind a major point reduction if I lose. I think in the last 2-3 weeks I have lost about 70 points due to playing people rated a lot lower than they actually are.

Example I played someone rated 1100 (but was 1800+ within last 30 days) I won both games after a hard fought battle and gained 0 pts. Yet if I played him at his normal rating I would have getting some points.
Maybe the points should be worked out from the highest rating in last 30 days rather than current rating.

To hell with the points. Just enjoy the games. Do the top ten players get paid bonuses? This is a free site so enjoy it.

I sympathize with what Boris is saying. Games are rated for a reason, and ratings are supposed to mean something. Players whose ratings often don't reflect their ability mess things up.

I don't mean to be rude but did you try PMing Dustin to find out if there was a good reason for him to do this (this time). Or, did you just decide to publicly denounce him? I, at one point, had close to 400 games going that I had to resign and get timed out of due to personal reasons that I had very little control over. Perhaps it is the same for Dustin....

Just a thought.

Dustin's rating has fluctuated wildly for as long as I can remember.

I don't know if this was supposed to be in response to my post; but, if it was, that still doesn't mean that he should be corrected publicly. I have seen him fluctuate quite a bit as well but I haven't noticed him go down this far before (I have as well and that is without resigning and being timed out). I guess it just seems like a matter of respect to me. I would have sent him a private message first.

What Dustin doesn´t know is that by his resignation spree he is starting a cycle that can last for a long time.
If Dustin wins against Boris, Boris will lose many points. and then if he wins someone else, this other guy will lose more points then he is supposed to.and so on with the next guy and the guy after that...

Thing is people are so touchy about people's rights on this site, surely it is everybody's right to resign their own games should they want to? I don't see what you can do about that, your real beef is with the scoring system, perhaps a rating floor needs to be adopted?

I'm not sure I have a strong opinion on this but here's some recent facts:

Whenever I get a new game, I write in a notebook I have my opponent, his rating, the date, etc. On Setember 23, I started a pair of clan games with Dustn his rating was 1666. I made a move this morning in those games and 3 (!) days later his rating is 1102. I also see that his highest rating in the last 30 days was 1842.

Just some ammo for the debate!

i beat him once - no idea why if he is such a good player.. well, the annoying thing was that the move before i won he had 1500 something points - and then when he resigned he had 1100 someting points... *sigh*... i got ..hmm.. 3 points out of that game? something like that...

Exy-- it isn't a question of rights. Clearly it's his right to handle his games however he wants. But the effects of his choices on his opponents, and on the rating system, should be noted.

I would hope that the Slow Pawn is just using Dustin as an illustration of a problem rather than blaming one individual, as Cheshire Cat has said people might have to resign or time out games at short notice through no fault of their own - therefore if there is a fault it's with the system that lets their rating drop to rock bottom. That's all I'm saying....

Dustin has wildly fluctuated like this since he appeared on this site. Heck, he was doing this before he played under the nick 'dustnrogers', when he was 'Final Conquest' and his supposed brother was 'Unexperienced Players'. He did this under another account 'Dustinrogers' (with an i as well. Personally, he's done this twice with me, and the second time he promised not to! So, easy fix: Don't play him. Check out potential opponents to see if their graphs fluctuate. If they do, then don't play them. Simple.
