Does anyone know a good software to amplify mp3s?

Hopefully freeware.

If it's because when you burn a cd/dvd it plays too quiet.

What I used to do was with Goldwave, [convert mp3 to wav first] and change the 'volume' in the file.

So maybe Goldwave [free]will suit you? I can't remember all the details but it worked for me.

I want to keep them in mp3, though. Can I convert back to mp3 later on? And how much damage to quality should I expect?

Yeah - re-convert to mp3 afterwards.
I couldn't see [hear]any difference in quality.
